You may not know the name, but I’m sure you know the music of Al Viola; he’s the guy who played the haunting mandolin soundtrack to the classic movie The Godfather. Viola has died at the age of 87 after a long battle with cancer.
After World War 2, Al became an in-demand guitar player in Hollywood, and featured on more than 500 albums. The guitarist worked with the likes of Frank Sinatra for 25 years, often behind Sinatra on tracks like New York New York and My Way.
Al Viola played his final performance last month Sherman Oaks, California Jazz club.
