US author Cormac McCarthy wins Pulitzer

This year’s prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Fiction has been awarded to American novelist Cormac McCarthy for his 10th novel, The Road. 73 year old McCarthy wins £5000 for the book that follows the struggle of a father and son’s survival in a post-apocalyptic world.

The Wall Street Journal received 2 prizes, one of which was the Public Service Award for a probe into stock options that rocked corporate America.

Paul Steiger, managing editor of the Wall Street Journal said of the series of stories: “tremendous pieces of work that resulted in more than 100 companies coming under investigation and many companies having to restate their earnings.”

Special citations were also awarded to the late Jazz musician John Coltrane, and science fiction’s Ray Bradbury. The Pulitzer was first created under the terms of the will of newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer in 1911.
