Finding out his wife is having an affair; Ted Crawford decides to kill her, he plans and carries out the murder. Police hostage negotiator Detective Nunally turns up at the scene and is the only person allowed to enter Crawford’s house where Crawford freely admits shooting his wife.
Nunally is shocked to find that the woman lying in a pool of blood is his lover, and on closer inspection realizes she is still alive. Crawford is arrested, and hot-shot assistant district attorney Willy Beachum believes it’s an open and shut case, but nothing is as simple as it seems.
