It seems that anything can be made into a Broadway musical, we have just learnt that there is to be a musical about the martial arts legend Bruce Lee, as well as former South African President Nelson Mandela. Bruce Lee: Journey to the West should be ready in time for 2010 or 2011, and will tell the story of how the best martial arts action hero rose to fame. The Nelson Mandela musical will look at the struggle that the former leader went through during apartheid and to fight for South Africa’s freedom, the musical should be ready by May 2010.
The story behind the Nelson Mandela will be based on a memoir which is written by Zindzi, Mandela’s daughter, and is based on her memories of growing up in the era of apartheid, and her memories of her father going to prison. This is not the first time that a musical about apartheid has been made into a Broadway musical, back in 1988 Sarafina told the story about the 1976 Soweto riots, which was then made into a movie and starred Whoopi Goldberg.
I would not like to be the person who has to pick the cast for the Bruce Lee musical, how many martial arts experts do you know can sing as well. The thing is, no matter who plays the part of Bruce Lee, everybody will be keeping a close eye on him, to see if he lives up to the great man himself, who I class as the original action hero.
