Church of Scientology School funded by Will Smith

Topic: Celebrity | May 21st, 2008
Tags: ,

If you all thought that Will Smith was going the Tom Cruise way and becoming a fully fledged member of The Church of Scientology, then the news that the Hollywood actor is now funding a new Scientology-based school, will only spark more rumors. According to reports from The Guardian, Smith is funding a new private school and will then utilize many of the Church of Scientology systems and beliefs. If reports are correct, at least $1 million has been pumped in to the new Scientology school, some of the education technologies which as been devised by L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of The Church of Scientology will be used in the school.

If you are a parent and you wish for your child to go to this new school, then you should expect to pay about $12,000 a year. This news will only help to fuel the fire, with the recent rumors that Smith has the same religious beliefs as his Hollywood pal Tom Cruise, even though he has refused to confirm that he has any such links to The Church of Scientology. In recent interviews Smith has said “I am a Christian. I am a student of all religions. And I respect all people and all paths;” he also added “I don’t necessarily believe in organized religion. I love my God, my higher power, but it is mine and mine alone, and I create my connection, and I decide how my connection is going to be.”

The school does not mention anything about the Church of Scientology, but as we said it is in the curriculum where the religion is seen, also the teaching staff is from the Church of Scientology in Los Angeles.

  1. Will Smith SHAME on you selling out to a cult. Any parents I urge you strongly to look into the background of this group and you will find a long history of child abuse, organized crimes. That “study tech” is crap, it is recruitment tool used by this cult to slowly indoctronate YOUR CHILDREN in this subversive criminal organization, and that is why it has been through out of hundreds of schools in the States. These are dangerous people, not to be taken lightly. Why are there so many suicides of children in the CO$???
Will Smith wants to turn your children over to a cult!!!

  2. Will Smith needs some critical education about the Church of Scientology.

I’d say he’s an intelligent man that would want to learn the Pros & Cons of anything, but frankly I doubt he’s getting the other side of the Scientology story.

The truth about this cult is being buried as malicious lies. Eventually it’s going to be much more difficult for any of us to point out the evidence.

  3. Any person can determine for him or herself the usability and effectiveness of Study Technology simply by finding out what it really is, easily achieved by going to http://www.studytechnology.org.

The basic false impression conveyed by those who are opposed to the Church of Scientology is that if one employs the technologies developed by Hubbard, then that equates to a person “being a Scientologist.”

Nothing could be further from the truth, which is easily determined by oneself simply be selecting one of the dozen chapters at http://www.scientologyhandbook.org and using the information contained and evaluating its effectiveness in assisting to better understand and resolve the type of problems most people encounter.

Anything which upsets the status quo and is perceived to shake the foundation of monopolistic interests (and their power and wealth) has traditionally been opposed.

Often this oppositon is by those who take the opinions of others without taking a look at the subject matter itself, not as reported or interpreted.

As regards the very strict guidelines of the Church of Scientology: place that in context to those antagnolsitic entities who have been at the forefront during the past nearly 60 years: the American Psychiatric Association (legalized drug pushers), the CIA (Hubbard made known its MKULTRA brain washing techniques that only Dianetics procedures are able to reverse), the IRS (long a tool of government to manipulate social activities, besides being detrimental to those who are productive), etc.

Were it not for the strictness with which Scientology governs itself (and rest assured, there have been errors made, some small, some large but an extraordinarily small percentage compared to the millions who have participated or are participating during the past nearly 60 years) it would not now exist, but would have been taken over by the same self-serving interests that have created this society that is, unfortunately, spinning out of control.

I have been a Scientologist for 40 years. I am not employed by any Church of Scientology nor any of its affiliated organizations. I am a Dianetics therapist and, within a relatively few hours during the course of one week, using Dianetics procedures (anyone can learn these), freed individuals of the most horrific traumas (including child rape) that they had been attempting to resolve (often for decades) through other approaches, primarily psychiatric and psychological counselling.

  4. I think it’s awesome. I have been using the study technology from Scientology for years now, and it has helped me a lot.

There is no doubt it works and I am happy to see that Will Smith, although not a member of the church (to my knowledge) is willing to use something that works to help children really learn.

The ability to learn is probably the single most important ability one can have, for it underlies every other ability, and Mr. Hubbard’s contributions to the field will live long in my heart.

Why did they commit the largest infiltration of US government offices?
    “Operation Snow White”

Why are they so against free speech, there willing to kill?

Why are they covering up the 20yr old Blue Asbestos on there boat the Freewinds, and not telling people they have been exposed and need to see a doctor?

Forget about the mental & physical abuses of children that are commonly talked about practices of the CO$.

Are these the kind ethics you want your children to have lie, cheat, steal, destroy anybody that speaks the truth about the crimes of the Scientology Organization?
I’ll be waiting, hope this info helps inform you as to the truth about $ientology.

  7. Forget about the rampant abuses of the Scientology organization for a moment. In this case, the BIG QUESTION should be: Is this nifty holistic $13,000-per-year school accredited?

If it’s not, any diploma from it won’t be worth the paper it’s printed on.

“Study Technology” (wth does that even mean? Sounds like something is plugged into your brain) is not accepted or accredited anywhere in the US. As was mentioned by other comments, hundreds of school systems have dismissed it or barred it since it has subpar results on a consistent basis. If this is the instruction technique underpinning this academy, the odds of it being recognized by the state are not too good. One of its major points is “stop in the middle of reading and look up a word in the dictionary if you don’t know it”–this disrupts the ability to comprehend via context clues, and it also is only as good as the dictionary you use. Organized Scientology has a video out where it proudly claims to have redefined over 28,000 words. What good is learning to read if you’re effectively learning the wrong language? It would be like teaching Spanish and calling it French, then expecting you to live in France.

Lafayette Hubbard was a scifi hack writer who failed college. He held no education credentials to speak of, and his only degree came from unaccredited mailorder degree farm ’schools’. Parents: do you want to subject your child to a course created by this guy?

The school seems less an educational facility and more a springboard into scientology. With no fewer than six confirmed scientologists on faculty and more concepts lifted straight from the CoS handbooks (ethics officer/teacher) it has all the appearances of being a cult primer.

  8. Dr. David S. Touretzky of Carnegie Mellon University has a website where he describes at length his professional observations about Applied Scholastics and the “study tech” that it uses to teach children. That website is http://www.studytech.org.

For those who don’t have the time to read through it—if you can possibly spare a half hour, I strongly recommend that you do so—Dr. Touretzky finds that:
    • While supporters of Study Tech claim that it is entirely secular, it is in fact ENTIRELY derived from Scientology. Entire paragraphs are taken word-for-word from HCO Bulletins and Policy Letters.
    • Its proponents claim miraculous results, yet no independent evaluation of its effectiveness has ever been done. Claims made about the success of Study Tech programs are often found to be fabricated when further investigation is done, or else they are too vague to be investigated.
    • Study Tech was designed for indoctrination, not education, and as a result it is completely at odds with promoting the ability to think independently. This can only deprive students of a skill vital in an age saturated with conflicting messages, where critical thinking is essential to making sense of the world.

If you think for even a moment that a program or school using Scientology’s Study Tech is beneficial or even harmless, PLEASE visit http://www.studytech.org and take a good long look at Dr. Touretzky’s findings.

I’ll leave you with this worrying letter from the founder of a similar Scientology school, Mojave Academy:

You can’t just take the enemy’s school system, give it a light coat of study tech and think you’re applying the L. Ron Hubbard philosophy on education.

Quite often a parent will give me a pretty grim picture of what his kid is into and in the same breath say: “Charley’s doing okay in school, he got an ‘A’ in Math.”

At that point I chill to the bone, for I know the boys who gave Charley that “A” and I know what it stands for: “Charley is progressing toward death at an acceptable rate.” We see all indications of his imminent demise and we are pleased.”

The enemy system is hypnotizing your child and making him stupid.

No, I’m not being harsh. I’m not being harsh enough!

For too many years the victims of this system have been brought to my office by shocked parents; their lives suddenly disrupted emotionally, legally, financially as they must now face what it will take to put Charley back together again.

The parents as you can imagine, are crushed. They see their cause now. It wasn’t Charley who betrayed them. It was they who betrayed Charley by sending him into the enemy camps unprepared to deal with the suppressives’ system.

That is what makes this so dangerous, how do people not see, they are preparing them slowly for themselves, teaching them the very fundamentals they will exploit, to further separate them from normal society they don’t care if they goto college or not. 11. Wow, the obsessive Scientology-hunters are really going out on a broken limb this time. Scientology is so many degrees of separation from this school, it’s beyond mentally ill that anyone would go after it so rabidly on grounds of it being tenuously connected to the cult.

There are lots of people who are interested in L. Ron Hubbard’s “Study Tech” for its own sake, and couldn’t care less about Scientology, much less the CHURCH of Scientology.

Are you people seriously going to spend the rest of your lives hunched over your computers, hounding anyone, anywhere, any time, who ever mentions Hubbard-related matters on their website? Does the phrase “get a life” come to mind??

Makes me want to create a couple hundred quickie websites for bogus companies that mention Hubbard, just to keep you morons eternally busy :)

  12. Questions for the people who have positive comments about study tech…

If it is so great why the secrecy?

Why no public answers to the questions about credentials of school and staff?

Why hide the fact that staff are all or mostly all Scientologists?

Why do Will and Jada Smith deny being Scientologists?

It is very difficult to reconcile Will Smith’s claim that he respects all people and their paths with what appears to be a bait and switch targeting children. No one who respects their fellow human beings would participate in such deception.

I do not believe you Will Smith. Why do you feel you need to be so dishonest?

Which is a perfect analogy for what’s going on here. Will Smith knows the public outcry if he admits to being a Scientologist. People (like me) are creeped out and sense the deceit. They (rightly) want no part of it!

But Will Smith says one thing and does another - putting a MILLION DOLLARS on the line, while denying any involvement in Scientology. We just thought he was a member of a dangerous cult. Now, he’s a liar, too.

  16. While the obvious shills checking in from Scientology’s security aparatchik are predictably quick to lay claim to the notion that their “study tech” is secular and disconnected from the main branch of their corporation (the one that they call a church), any seperation between the two entities is simply a legal one, set up primarily for the purpose of quietly infiltrating public school systems by skirting around the unfortunate seperation of church and state issues that came into place once they chose to label themselves as a “church”.

As to be expected, they suggest visiting their own promotional web sites in order to “learn all there is to know” about the subject.

For the less gullible, another site, often used by educators, showing a less promotional viewpoint would be:

    http://www.studytech.org

The advancement of Internet communications has dealt a serious blow to Scientology. Even their once successful trick of recruiting through the allure of pampered celebrities is now failing quite miserably. They are trying to counter the impact of an increasingly educated and aware public by hiding behind a myriad of front groups.

It’s sad that Will Smith’s career is being squandered in such a way, but it was his decision to make, and he’s just going to have to live with the results of being the 21st century front man for a 20th century failure.

  17. Will Smith’s Scientology School uses L Ron Hubbard ‘Study Technology’. However, the other, non-Hubbard, teaching theories that the school claims to use were, I think, invented by educational psychologists. (http://newvillageacademy.org/_bin/curriculum/Glossary.cfm)

Mr Hubbard repeatedly wrote that psychologists are suppressive persons whose sole purpose is to enslave humanity, in complete contrast to Scientology. The product of Hubbard ‘Study Tech’ is a student who knows that that the definition of psychologist is ‘psychotic criminal’. Tom Cruise knows this, that’s why he’s so riled up.

If the school is using Hubbard Tech, its absurd for it to pretend to use psychology. Hubbard Tech and Psychology are IN NO WAY compatible, according to Mr Hubbard. Adulterating ‘Study Tech’ with psychology is a High Crime in Scientology. Mission number one is to obliterate ‘Psychs’ (psychologists and psychiatrists), not go to their evil schools.

Accordingly, no scientologist should send their children to this school . . . .

unless the school’s claim that they are using these psychology techniques is just a front to confuse the public and give kids proper Scientology indoctrination.

    Comment by Lex — May 22, 2008 @ 12:14 am

  18. What’s so great about the study tech of L. Ron Hubbard?

The real deal is that it produces people who can DO the things they have been trained to do as opposed to people who can spit out facts at an exam with really knowing what to do with them.

For those who actually care about education standards, well why don’t you have a look at the current situation in the US.

And just so you don’t say “this is scientology propaganda”, search it yourself on Google or elsewhere: Type “illiteracy US” or similar keywords and you will discover interesting data. While I do not mean to tell you how you should search and what not to look at, you may be interested to go in Google’s advanced search options and select articles in the past year, just to make sure you have current data.

Bottom line is that illiteracy has been progressing in the US and that most unemployed people, and people living on welfare, are functionally illiterate. Same goes for most criminals currently in jail.

We need really effective solutions to study and my experience is that study tech is just that.

While the Study technology was originally developped by Mr. Hubbard to help students study Scientology materials, it has far reaching applications and can be used to study any subject, from computers to economics or flying airplanes.

The basic principles are simple and straightforward: make sure you are studying for the right reasons (studying to apply rather than studying to get a grade), identify and evaluate the relative importance of data based on how you are going to use them, identify, locate and remove the obstacles which are preventing you from going ahead.
These have very exact symptoms and locating the reason for them allows you to regain your enthusiasm for study and keep going ahead, understanding what you are studying.

If a student follows the study technology, he is not only able to get good grades at the exam, but he also can use what he has studied in the real world.

Now, clearly, study technology is very important in the study of Scientology, but you have be a complete moron to think that’s the only thing you can study with it. Math, Physics, economy… all become considerably clearer once you start applying the study technology, and that’s why some scientologists will use these same practices to help students with other subjects.

Using study tech to learn maths or physics is not a religious activity, so a school making use of these principles is certainly not a religious activity.

  19. “Meanwhile, it’s a nice day and I’m going out in the sun. Good luck living your life on the internet, trying to save the world from Scientology in all its insidious, nefarious, hard-to-detect, ten-degrees-of-separation forms!”

Ten degrees? Maybe you should take a break from going out into the sun and, you know, maybe do a little homework.

If you look at the bottom of the official site for Hubbard’s Study Technology, you might see, right down at the bottom: “© 1996-2006 Church of Scientology International. All Rights Reserved.”

Well then. That’s something less than ten degrees. Do I hear five degrees?

    Four?

Come on, who’ll give me two?

Sold! at ZERO DEGREES OF SEPARATION.

If you are not, in fact, a shill, then I should advise you to think before mashing the keyboard with any one of your eleven sausage-fingers.

“Using study tech to learn maths or physics is not a religious activity, so a school making use of these principles is certainly not a religious activity.”

Except that the technology either works, like your cellular phone, or it doesn’t, like cold fusion or the Raelian’s cloning technique. Guess which of these categories study technology falls into?

Comment by Anon and on and on — May 23, 2008 @ 5:36 am

  20. If study technology is so great, then why do so many kids who grew up in the sea org have no high school diploma? After all their years and use of this great method, they have nothing to show for it?

But your right, who wouldn’t want that for their kid? No diploma, no real world skills, probably can’t even get transcripts to take to a real school.

Tell the truth, if you can (I don’t think so) does Scientology recognize any other institution other than itself as having any validity?

Also, FYI, no accreditation means no oversight and no liability. God forbid this “church” should ever be accountable for all the harm they cause.

    Comment by jane — May 23, 2008 @ 6:15 am

  21. The purpose of “study tech” is not education, along with Narconon and
Criminon it’s only purpose is to get people to join the cult of Scientology. L Ron Hubbard was at best a second-rate science-fiction writer who flunked out of his first year of college. He developed Scientology by feeding his son amphetamines and recording his rantings, that’s why you hear the word “clam” associated with Scientology, Ron Jr’s hallucinations was that humans evolved form clams!

    Comment by bob dobbs — May 23, 2008 @ 9:05 am

  22. You know, once these children start writing knowledge report on their parent’s activities, Scientology will have its own spy network! Nice isn’t it.

A bit like the old former communist block, where children were indoctrinated to spied on their parents and neighbours on each other. It is simply a brilliant idea, after all children to have a tendency of listening on things that aren’t suppose to be heard. And have free excess to the entire house.

I can imagine a school activity would have the child taking pictures of all the important documents in the house and sending it to the school teacher. A happy star to the child that can bring in material useful for political blackmail.

The key I imagine, would be to get parents in important sections of the government and private sector to enroll their children in Will Smith’s School of Indoctrination and Intelligence gathering. And the high school fees do suggest that wealthier households (which parents in important jobs) are being targeted.

Of course, the missing element to this school is scholastic accreditation. Once obtained it should be easy enough to give a normal school lessons, the right political and religious overtones.

    Tech sets you free.
A key to power is to control the future. And children are people who will make that future. Control the thoughts and dreams of children and you will control the reality of tomorrow.

  27. Sylver, yup it is pretty strange alright.

But so is Scienotology’s Operation Snow White where Scientology infiltrated and stole documents from 136 government agencies, foreign embassies and consulates, as well as private organizations critical of Scientology, in over 30 nations. In the US alone, Scientology had 5,000 covert agents. Aside from document theft, plans included planting false information.

I don’t know what kind of funny pill scientologist are taking, but their ‘religion’ sure has them doing some mighty exciting and interesting things. Scientology sure beats other religions eg. Buddism, Chritianity, Hinduism, Islam, Haruhiism and Jediism.

Other planned elements of operation Snow White included petitioning governments and the United Nations to charge governments critical of Scientology with genocide!

The proper response to this is, which James Bond movie review did I just read. This can’t be real. But it is, as the FBI found out when the raided the Church of Scientology. The court documents are a record of this.

So with such a history, what do you think Scientology will do with a school full of children from well to do families?

    Teach children science, history, literature?
Or do you think Scientology would prefer
Indoctrination, intelligence gathering, loyalty and obedience?

Scientology is as funny and harmless, as pack of laughing hyenas. It is all laughs until you find yourself surrounded and realise that hyena don’t actually laugh. So get real people.

Lastly a sample of questions Scientologist ask during an audition session.

    Have you driven anyone insane?
Have you ever wiped out a family?
Have you ever torn out someone’s tongue?

o_o Um no…no…. and no…. would be my answer.
My fear would be for the Scientologist Auditor (kind of like a priest) to turn around and say ‘Do you need me to show you how?’

  28. as far as “helping humanity” goes, there are thousands of legitimate groups out there that do exactly what Narcanon, Crimanon, The Way To Happiness, and Applied Scholastics all claim to do, except they do it by using proven testable methods, and gain the acceptance of legitimate governing parties.

Please don’t be fooled for one second, there is a complete and distinguishable difference between altruistic actions in helping enrich the lives of others, and simply using the weakest, most exploitable members of a society as a pawn for your group to gain acceptance and public appeal. Guess which one Scientology does?

Even if Scientology didn’t constantly commit atrocious crimes, it would still be nothing more than a business hawking methods that don’t work, using fraudulent claims. But you can’t be mad at them just for that, otherwise you’d have to be mad at everyone who’s ever sold anything on late night TV.

“Scientology works, that’s why Scientology is still here.” Yeah, and thats why people still buy Spray on Hair in a can, Penis enlarging pills, and follow the South Beach diet, oh and spend billions of dollars a year gambling in casinos. Because people are fucking idiots. If they weren’t, you’re right, Scientology wouldn’t be there. So what does that say about it?

  32. Well, of course we can find out about the effectiveness of this stuff.

It is extremely effective at leading people into Scientology, more so than any other educational system. It has no demonstrated effectiveness at anything else, and is worse than pretty much every other educational system known to man. It turns out that when the foundation of your “education” is brainwashing designed to eradicate critical thought and cognitive ability, that produces poor outcomes.

Except for L. Ron Hubbard’s wallet.

  33. Hey all,
While we are all calling ‘Applied Scholastics’ evil and brain washing. Has anybody looked up the http://www.exscientologykids.com/eskforums/viewtopic.php?t=79

People who have gone through the scientology education system say it ain’t good, even if you ignore the blatant attempts at recruiting students into scientology and Seaorg (Looks to be Scientology’s own private navy… I kid you not. The Church of Scientology has a Navy. Next somebody will tell me they have an Army and Air force as well.)

Any way, people who go to scientology High School have problems applying for places as their high school diplomas aren’t valid and the scientology High Schools don’t cover all the core subjects.

So lets hope Will keeps to elementary school. If Will reached out and started a Scientology High School, it would be such a shame that after all the money (Scientology high school cost $32,000 - that is a lot of money, I can go to Yale with that kind of money) and having The Fresh Prince as your principle, you won’t even be able to apply to Uni.

  35. Wow, the vitriol being spewed here is amazing. There is a maxim in Scientology; the more you set people free, the more Suppressive People yell. I guess we’re doing something right.

Keep up the good work, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith.

You know… regular people see their friends and coworkers improving their lives with Scientology and get interested. That’s why it grows. Over 140 brand new groups formed just this last year.

Oh and on all this hate speach…

Psychiatry was laughed out of american universities when it first came up. It was forced into their curriculum by Rockefeller and his millions. But “accredited” schools produce 50% failure in business, not to mention criminals like psychiatrist.

Also… their are plenty of governments that use “Scientology” tech; the tech of administration. The entire Nation of Israel uses Criminon in their prisons. That program turned their 77% recidivism rate to ZERO for the graduates of the program. You can cry all you want, but empirical evidence is hard to refute when people see it for themselves. That is all Will did; he looked for himself and saw the results. But, of course, any certainty to you is just “brainwashing.”

Also, there was an Online Hate Crime Conference recently that you can see here:

  36. LOL
Frank Blakely, have you actually read the ’scientific papers’ that back Narconon? It is hillariously bad. Can you say cherry picking your results?

Take an experiment, I have 10 people in the programe.
    6 drop out
    4 finish the programe
1 person later go back to drugs.

What is the sucess rate of the programe?
Scientology’s calculations says 3/4 = 75% success! Narconon is good
or you might it is really 3/10 = 30% which is bad.

And the hawk eye amoungst you might say, but where is the control? How do you know that those 3 people wouldn’t have kicked the drug habit on their own? What is the sucess rate of people trying to quit ? It may well be 0% or it may well be 30 %. If 30% can stop by will power alone, the programme is useless.

And lastly , you are looking only at 10 people. The sample size is so small. What if by chance those 3 people were really committed to quiting. Increase the sample size, to 30 people, and you might still have only 3 people staying drug free. 3/30 = 10% sucess rate

These are the kind of flaws in the ’studies’ that are used to back up Narconon. Cherry picking their data, miss reporting results, no controls and a sample size so small, the study is all but useless.

There is no hate. There is only the Force! Newtonian force!
