It has been announced that a number of the biggest names in British TV and sport, have been awarded gongs in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. Countdown presenter O’Connor who is now 76 gets a CBE. He said he was “delighted” with his award but confessed: “I haven’t done a day’s work in my life. I’ve done a day’s effort but not work, because it’s something I love.”
EastEnders star June Brown said her MBE for services to drama and charity was “lovely”. June who is an amazing 81-year-old is the president of the Michael Elliott Trust, which gives children with special needs the chance to care for abandoned donkeys. An MBE is also awarded to Paul O’Grady, who invented Lily Savage, “the Birkenhead bombshell”.
An OBE went to Lawrence Dallaglio who is the former England and Wasps captain, who has just retired from club and international rugby. He was recognised as one of the world’s best back-row players and was a key part of the victorious England World Cup team in Australia in 2003.
Also a CBE for Beaumont, who won 34 caps for England and captained the side 21 times. Beaumont, who played as lock, retired in 1982 through injury and became a successful TV performer.
TV screenwriter Russell T Davies, the man who breathed new life into Doctor Who, gets an OBE for services to drama.
