One of the greatest visual-effects and makeup guru’s Stan Winston has sadly died aged just 62. The Hollywood wizard was behind such films like The Terminator movies as well as Iron Man, Aliens and Jurassic Park. Winston, who died on Sunday, had been battling plasma cancer for seven years. He won four Oscars as well as being nominated many times, and was well respected in Hollywood.

Winston’s most recent work was in the blockbuster Iron Man, where his studio created the hero’s high-tech armoured suits. Winston has always maintained his life’s work was about building characters, not gadgets, despite the films that he worked on were heavy on special effects. In a 2003 interview with the BBC, Winston said “I don’t do special effects. I create characters and I use the tools of special effects necessary to do it.”

Stan Winston started his movie career back in 1969, when he took a day job as an apprentice to a Disney makeup artist. In just a few short years, Stan won his first Emmy for his work in the 1972 TV-movie, Gargoyles. Throughout the 1970s, Winston worked on a number of low-budget movies; however he got his big break when director James Cameron asked him to bring the T-series cyborgs to life in The Terminator movies.

After Terminator, Winston was getting work from everyone; he worked on some great movies from Jurassic Park and Artificial Intelligence: A.I.; as well as Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands, Interview with a Vampire and Predator.
