It has been announced that on Tuesday Cyd Charisse died at the aged of 86. Cyd Charisse was the long-legged beauty who danced with the Ballet Russe as a teenager and starred in MGM musicals with Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. It’s said that Cyd was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Monday after suffering an apparent heart attack, according to her publicist, Gene Schwam. She died at 12.15 am (0715 GMT).
It’s said that Cyd Charisse rose to fame as the big studio musical was fading from view, playing the vamp who entices Kelly in “Singin’ in the Rain.”
Cyd Charisse left her home in Amarillo, Texas as a young girl for the better dance studios in Los Angeles and was hired at 14 by the legendary Ballet Russe. It’s then said that she toured Europe, changing her name several times to better fit into the program, until the troupe disbanded when the war broke out in 1939.
Cyd Charisse continued to make films into the 1970s and developed a successful nightclub act with her husband, who was devastated by her death on Tuesday. Her husband Tony is said to be beside himself and he is heart is broken.
