Dody Goodman who we knew and loved as the daffy comedian on many TV and stage shows such as Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman as well as a number of appearances on Jack Paar’s late-night talk show has sadly died aged 93. Dody Goodman died on Sunday at Englewood (N.J.) Hospital and Medical Center, and according to friend Joan Adams she had been ill for some time as a result had to stay in the Actors Fund Home in Englewood since October.
Goodman had an eclectic show-business career; she managed to make the transition from stage to television to movies very easy. One part that most will remember Dody for was playing the principal’s assistant, Blanche, in Grease and Grease 2. What gave Goodman the first of her attention was on The Tonight Show, hosted by Jack Paar. It was her quirky, off-kilter remarks which seemed to get some great laughs from the audience.
In a 1994 interview with The Associated Press, Goodman said “I had no idea how to do that. In fact, they just called me up and asked me if I wanted to be on ‘The Jack Paar Show.’ I didn’t know who Jack Paar was. They said, ‘We just want you to sit and talk.” Goodman fell out with host Paar, but it was not long before other chat shows were only too quick to offer her some appearances, such as The Merv Griffin Show and Girl Talk.
Dody Goodman also had a number of TV appearances, such as Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, Diff’rent Strokes, Murder, She Wrote and St. Elsewhere. Goodman never married; she is survived by seven nieces and nephews as well as 11 great nieces and nephews, and 15 great-great nieces and nephews.
