It has been announced that nothing will stop Amy Winehouse from playing at Nelson Mandela’s gig on Friday night. According to reports Amy left hospital yesterday for rehearsals, before returning on doctors’ advice. A source said that “Amy doesn’t want to cancel - it’s keeping her going. She begged the doctors to let her out to rehearse. She went into the studio for a few hours and sang her heart out. She sounded amazing. No matter what else is happening in her life, Amy can still turn it on.”
A source also said that “She has scarring on her lungs, which doctors say could lead to emphysema, but she isn’t as bad as her dad first thought, thank goodness.”
Amy’s father Mitch Winehouse modified his statement on Monday to say that Amy is suffering from an early stage of the disease and is responding well to treatment. He also confirmed that his daughter will perform at the Glastonbury Festival in England on Saturday and that medical tests conducted since she fainted at her home on June 16 have shown that she has a “small amount of emphysema.”
For those of you who don’t know what Emphysema is it’s an incurable disease that reduces the ability of the sufferer’s lungs to expel air due to damage to tiny airways called bronchioles.
Mitch said that one of the main motivations that are keeping Amy’s spirits up is the thought of being able to take the stage and perform again. “That’s what she lives for, and she really wants to do the gigs at the weekend. And with the doctors’ permission she will perform. She will be well enough to be at Glastonbury, not could be. She’s well enough to be at Glastonbury now.”
