When it comes to children’s animated movies, Pixar Animation Studios always seems to offer us the best movies. Just last year we were treated to Ratatouille, now the latest thing to come from the studio is Wall-E, and it looks as though they have topped themselves once again. Wall-E is a whimsical sci-fi fantasy about robots 800 years into the future, and when you watch the movie you are reminded of those old silent movies from 60-years ago. As you might have already learned, there is no talking in this movie, Pixar have said that we should not expect robots to talk, instead we have to listen to a series of clanking noises, explosions, music and even dance numbers. This does not spoil the movie though; the visuals alone are enough for you to understand theses robotic creatures.
THR believe that the film is cleverly made, so well in fact that many believe it to be a little too sophisticated for some audiences to connect with. However; I would not read too much it too this as this was also the thought of Ratatouille, Wall-E is both sweet and funny, and so most fans will surrender themselves to the films charms.
The movie is about a polluted and toxic earth, which does seem to send a message for us today, Earth as a result has since been abandoned by mankind centuries before, but it seems that somebody forgot to switch off the last robot. Wall-E is an acronym that stands for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class, the robot is simply a trash compactor, and he just keeps on at his job. He has developed a unique storage system so that he can self-replicate his own parts. He does have a companion though, a cockroach.
Mankind has a spaceship above the earth and decide to send out a probe, so they can search for any signs of life. The probe is called Eve, which stands for Extra-terrestrial Vegetation Evaluator. It seems that Wall-E develops a crush on Eve, although she does have a short temper, if anything moves all she wants to do is give it a blast. Wall-E at first is very shy, however it is not long before romance starts to blossom.
He then decides to show her his little green plant, this is what Eve has been searching for, and as a result the robot couple then start their epic journey to the Axiom spaceship. While there, the other robots then overthrow the robotic controlled civilization. They then work to galvanize humans — more robotic than the actual robots — into something approaching Life.
No one can deny that the visuals in Wall-E is Pixar’s best to date, both worlds have been superbly created, from our destroyed world, to the spaceship. One of the greatest achievements of this movie has to be the use of old movie footage, which has been mixed with CG animation; this is what triggers Wall-E’s romantic side. Whenever he finishes his work he will put on a video tape of Hello, Dolly, the 1969 movie. It is that movie that helps him to understand love as well as passion.
Wall-E is a superb movie, one that I think Pixar will find it hard to top.
