Meet Dave: Eddie Murphy just tries too hard

Meet Dave is the latest movie from funnyman Eddie Murphy; well it seems as if I am using the term funnyman loosely when it comes to Murphy’s movies these days. It seems to me that Murphy is at his best when he is hiding behind makeup in his films, one of the best movies I have seen him in is Coming to America, how funny was his barber shop scenes.

Meet Dave is a sci-fi comedy about a spaceship that lands on earth, and we are meant to think it is funny that the spaceship is in the shape of a man. Well you have already guessed that the spaceship is Eddie Murphy and is controlled by loads of little crewman. The idea sounds fun, but trust me it is not.

There are some good moments in this film, but if you blink you might just miss them. Watching Murphy walking around New York making stupid faces makes it look as if Murphy is trying too hard, his performance makes me think that this once superb comedian is just on auto pilot throughout the movie.

As this movie is a sci-fi comedy it makes a few gibes out of Star Trek, this will not please Trekkies, bad move people. I think that the main problem with Meet Dave is how stiff Murphy’s performance is; I think it is better when he is left to do his own thing and act as daft as possible.

If you want to go and see a comedy that will give u one or two laughs, then by all means go and see Meet Dave, but I am left feeling a little sad as I think we have now lost one of our greatest comedy actors.
