Boxer Oscar Diaz is now to undergo brain surgery after he collapsed during his fight with Delvin Rodriguez on Wednesday night. Delvin is thought to be concerned about his fellow fighter.
In the 11th round of the USBA welterweight title, Diaz rose from his stool but began to wobble and then crashed to the canvas.
Referee Robert Gonzalez had seen this and immediately signalled for the bell, which was when medical personnel rushed into the ring.
Physician Dr. Wayne Lee has said that “He was breathing and he has a blood pressure, but he was not responding to our commands. Oscar Diaz was taken away from the ring on a stretcher and then taken to University Hospital.
He is now to undergo brain surgery to relieve swelling and bleeding on the brain. Although the fight now counts as a victory for Rodriguez, he has said that he is more concerned about his opponent’s well-being than his victory.
