Sunday’s German Grand Prix looked as if it was going to be a boring one, from the start McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton was thundering of into the distance. They seemed to have the race in the bag, but a crash changed the race on its head.
Timo Glock crashed his car and that sent the safety car out, once the pit lane was open all the front runners went into the pits for their second stop. Well all expect Hamilton and Nick Heidfeld; this decision shocked myself and thousands of Hamilton fans.
So McLaren was now left with a mountain to climb, once the safety car went in Lewis was off again and did manage to pull a 13 second lead, but that was not enough. When he came out of the pits he was in fifth and had 17 laps to go, I though that was that.
What I watched next was a master class in driving, many fans of F1 including myself have complained that there was not enough overtaking in the sport; well Hamilton was there to prove us all wrong.
It was not long before he had caught second place man Massa, he passed him but Massa did not make it easy and tried to come back but Lewis was having none of it and forced him wide. Nelson Piquet was Lewis’s last target; well it looked like taking candy from a baby.
On any other day we would have questioned McLaren’s decision not to bring Lewis in, but it just shows what a great driver Hamilton is and how well the car is working.
