The much anticipated Batman movie The Dark Knight has smashed the weekend Box Office record set by Spider-Man 3 from last year. The new comic book movie has sold an estimated $155.3 million worth of tickets over the three days across the U.S and Canada, Spider-Man 3 did $151.1 million last year.
Many Batman fans would have been coming to see the new movie, just to see if it lives up to all the hype. However; most people would have been going to see Heath Ledger’s performance as The Joker.
According to Reuters, many movie pundits had forecast that The Dark Knight would have an opening weekend of $100 million; it seems that they underestimated how popular the new Batman movie was.
The Dark Knight also managed to pull in $40 from 20 foreign markets; the movie took $13.1 million back in Ledger’s home country Australia.
The new Batman movie cost about $180 million, so it only has another $30 million to take before it breaks even.
A great movie indeed.
