Michael Phelps has won gold for the 100m Butterfly; this now means that he has equaled the record of seven gold medals which has been held by Mark Spitz since 1972 at the Munich Olympics.
Phelps did not finish in a commanding lead like we are normally used to seeing him do, the American won by the smallest of margins. He was behind and had to fight back, Phelps put on a final push over the last few meters he had to extend his body as much as he could to hit his mark to take the gold.
Michael Phelps has now won 13 Olympic gold medals in his career, he is now hoping to make that 14 and take his Beijing Olympic gold medal count to 8 and beating the record of most gold’s in one Olympic Games.
Phelps’s coach, Bob Bowman, told CBC Sports “I was very worried that Michael was beaten.” He also added “My heart took a good workout during that. I think it was beating faster than his was during the race.”
Will Michael Phelps be able to make it eight gold medals; you have to remember that his body is now getting a little tired now?
