It had been hoped that the new 2009 Star Trek movie would have done better than what it did at the box office on its first full weekend, but the movie seems to be lacking abroad. The new J.J Abrams movie earned $35.5 million from 54 foreign countries over the weekend, just under half of what it grossed in the U.S.
Star Trek movies have traditionally performed better in the states than abroad. The new movie has received some great reviews, a mix of a great director, a great new cast, and a story that takes things back to basics. The two actors who stand out are Chris Pine as Capt. James Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock.
Reuters reports that Star Trek 2009 did well in the U.K. and Ireland, earning $8.8 million. It also fared well in other countries, with earnings of $4.6 million in Germany, $3.4 million in Australia and $2.8 million in France.
Early domestic debut was $76.5 million, so the gross total now stands at $112 million. These figures will be boosted, as Japan will see the release of the movie on May 29, and India on June 12.
