Celebrity Apprentice 2009: Winner gets poker industry reactions
The finale of NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice 2009 saw Joan Rivers crowned the winner, beating World Series of Poker’s Annie Duke. Rivers held her own but some will argue that she did not seem to do as good as a job on the final task as Duke did, but for some reason Donald Trump chose Rivers.

Celebrity Apprentice 2009: Winner gets poker industry reactions

The poker industry has reacted badly to this decision and would like to know the reasons behind the decision. One PocketFiver admitted that Joan did win the final task. Standard TV entertainment added that at least some charities benefitted from the show, between Joan and Duke over $1.2 million was raised.

Poker News Daily has reported that a number of poker players were unhappy with some of the terms that were used by Joan and Melissa Rivers, to describe poker players during the season of the show.

The Rivers women called Duke a “whore,” “pit viper,” and “Nazi” and called poker players “trash.” The poker community said that those slanderous statements may come back to bite her.

Annie deserved to win, she wiped the floor with Joan.

If the decoration wasn’t messed up by Joan then Annie would have won three out of five criteria.

The Trumps said it was not about who raises the most money but come on $150k VS $450k? Surely that was a mouth dropping amount and should have held much more weight than one tick box.

Joan deserved to be fired, but she walks in the same circles as Donald Trump so I guess he wouldn’t have been able to face her after wards and took the easy option. Tragic.

I have watched this series from the beginning, and quite honestly…I didnt care for either Joan or Annie…Joan, cause she is SUCH a drama queen, and Annie..cause she is way to cocky..but if I had to pick a winner based on the amount of work done, it would hve been Annie. We all know the ONLY reason Joan won is because of her age, I mean com’n, she literally WALKED off the show, yet The DON appointed her The Apprentice. Just goes to show..this show, as well as others we wont name, is rigged. They know from the very beginning whos gonna win.

  • Rebecca

I have enjoyed the Apprentice and even agreed last season that Pierce did the better job. But this season has lead me to believe that unfortunately it was rigged. First, Joan walked out, then she lied about the Event planner. Trump was a pansy. His kids called Joan a roll model? Annie Duke was robbed! All I can say to Joan is “Karma”. I hope Vegas tells her “You’re fired”

  • Lydia

Annie Duke was controlling from the get go. She steam rolled over everyone and made snide comments herself so she is no better than Joan. Come on people it’s a game….it helps ratings.

Trace Atkins nailed it when he said something about how he’s played a lot of poker..(etc)…and then chose Joan.
Unsaid perhaps was ‘knowing when to fold’.
Nobody on the show would criticize Joan despite Donald’s trying to nail them all down…
    .
I only watched the last show – so didn’t know who Annie was, but she sure outclassed Joan Rivers. I saw a side to Joan Rivers and regardless of her years in the industry – she’s lost my respect. I was appalled at her behavior.
    .
I also thought the party planner quitting was a Donald set-up…if nobody will confront Joan – what party planner in their right mind would state on National TV that they refuse to work with Celebrity Apprentice? (Donald Trump).
    .
And Melissa proud of her mother? Good role modelling there Joan.
    .
It’s a safe bet that Annie’s children are proud of her accomplishment and her class.
    .
As to Annie’s fellow poker player? You had a great ambassador that night.
    .
Continued great things for you Annie!

  • Amy

What happened with Donald’s pick is exactly what’s wrong with government as well. It doesn’t matter that Annie did a much better job at raising funds and worked harder and showed up for work every day, Donald kissed Joan’s ass because they have the same group of friends and so Joan won. I think it’s great that Joan is going strong (and still bitchy as ever) at her age but having energy when you are old shouldn’t be a reason to award someone the title of celebrity apprentice. It was a bogus outcome and I will not watch apprentice again. I also thought Donald was very rude to Annie and used her for her money making ability and then screwed her over just like all these companies keep using up their employees and throwing them away!

  • Piper

Joan Rivers “event planner” was inept and Joan was not out of line in seeking help elsewhere. Annie would have done the same thing! The event planner was in over his head and his quitting showed that he didn’t know what he was doing. It seems to me that overcoming obstacles is what Mr. Trump was looking for in a leader. Annie’s constant Joan bashing to everyone she spoke with on the phone about the planner quitting was disgusting. Annie is a narcisist and she can’t stand for anyone to have the upper hand over her. She played Brandi like a fiddle. Good for Joan for standing up to her…she showed guts, leadership and class. I’ll bet that Annie is still working behind the scenes badmouthing Joan and getting her croanies to do her bidding by speaking out against her. Annie did do a great job on the apprentice and she did a good job in portraying her charity in the final challenge. I wish Joan had done a better job at that because the piece they ran afterwards showed that her charity comes from the heart and is truly worthwhile and deserving of the attention and donations it will receive as a result of her doing the show.

  • mike hunt

    Who cares????

  • Jan

Annie needs to get over it. This was an ugly competition on both sides. I’m sure the charities are very proud. It’s not like any celebrities/poker players have never insulted each other. Joan was pissed and she has a sailor mouth but at least she will mouth off what she thinks about you to your face. Annie definitely showed signs of insincerity. Grow up and move on people.

  • Jazz

Being a B doesn’t make you a winner; in business, is a bad thing and I think the right decision was made here. One for the good guys.

  • Gary

Donald Trump acts like he is in charge and making decisions, but looks and acts confused. He seemed to think the contest was about how much stamina an old person can have. I have always admired Joan Rivers, and had thought that criticism of her was mean and undeserved. I now am of the opinion that criticism of her may of been mean, but certainly deserved. She is bitter, loud, bigoted, arrogant, two-faced, and altogether unpleasant. If she is the face of American business. We are doomed. This was ther first season of American Apprentice that I watched, but I can’t imagine that I will watch again.

  • Steve Hall

What a fix, All Joan did was kiss Trumps ass. No one in there right mind would hire her.She is a vindictive, loud mouth, human being.I didn’t realize how much she looked like Jack Nickelsen as the Joker in the first batman.

  • lasttimeiwatch

i agree. what a waste to watch the whole season only to see trump select joan. i have a lot of respect for trump, but i was surprised to even see joan in the final 6 let alone win the job. this will be my final season watching the show. this season the show became the jerry springer show. i will spend my time watching shows of higher quality.

  • Dennis

I am a lifelong Joan Rivers fan. I didn’t know Annie that well. I admired the game both played. I saw some of Annie’s aggressiveness both positive and negative, but don’t believe that Joan and Melissa were fair. They sunk too low. Why this happened I don’t understand.

I have lost quite a bit of my respect. Annie deserved to win.

  • VB

Both Joan Rivers and Annie Duke are Generals amongst most men and women.

However, I was very uncomfortable watching Joan’s worsening behavior as a hater from
Annie’s supposed back-biting Melissa. Joan’s name-calling attacks were as dirty as the worse of a real war battle. Yet, Joan is so smart that I believed she would’ve out-wit the also very smart Annie. Instead, Joan fought with emotional more so than intellectual skills.

Joan’s verbal outbreaks were crazy and then Annie began a turn-about open name-calling against Joan. Where Annie lost in this horrible insult battle was when she crossed the boundaries of name-calling into threatening; ‘This woman (Joan) needs to die.’

An expressed death threat –even tho completely unintended — is worse than slander.

Between the two of these phenomenal women, Joan fought dirty for her and her daughter
where, supposedly, Annie began the dirty fight with (maybe even the lightest) backstabbing. Insult someone from Joan’s world — her daughter — so then Joan insults Annie and her people — poker players — as fair game. Then, slanders and slanders equal; not slanders and threats.

What I cannot figure out is if Joan knew to fight dirty to win or if Annie truly irked Joan to it.

Then Joan didn’t threat, but Annie (mistakenly) did in the heat of a battle.
Would you’d rather only hire the person who did slander or did death threat?
And according to Kodak, Joan won 3 of the 5 projects in the last task.
I believe — in all fairness — Mr. Trump correctly chose Joan as the 2009 winner.

  • Val

There was not honor or integrity between Joan and Donald.

What a fixed shop, Donald will choose over his buddies any day. If I were the next celebrity apprentice, I would quit now. Who wants to pay a game without rules.

  • Val

By the way I won’t bother to turn on anything that has Joan or Donald in it. I’ve been a huge fan of both my entire life! I am very disappointed in their behavor and persona.

  • exiler

Way to go Joan. Annie is a douche bag.

  • josephine.nguyen@yahoo.com

Blah blah blah Annie, just lose graciously.

I liked Clint. Always a smile no matter what anyone said. He never bad mouthed anyone behind their backs either.

  • Dennis

Rivers is the real trash. Her and her daughter Melissa define trash.

Trump choosing Rivers is not too much of a stretch….Trash enjoys trash.

  • Zack

Your all whiners….. Joan Rivers is a force….. The show is based on who has the bigger name in the finals….. Its Celebrity for a reason….. These people all have better things to do…. Is your live any different with Joan being Celebrity Apprentice instead of Annie????? Be real…..They both sucked…..

  • Zack

ITS A SHOW!!!!! ITS SUPPOSED TO BE ENTERTAINING NOT REALITY!!!!! I BET TRUMP IS WAY COOL IN PRIVATE!!!!! TV is a little different….

  • carla

joan is the whore pitt viper. she is a loud mouth whinner, that looks like the joker in the first batman movie. they should do a re mix of the song poker face and call it joker face. and for trump i will never watch your show again, and if i were a professional poker player i would boycott his casinos.

  • Snowman

    Just a couple observations:

Who is the real business world would say they quit, leave in a huff (over someone else’s firing) and then be allowed to return to work when the tantrum subsides?

Who in the real business world would be allowed to refer to a co-worker as “worse than Hitler” and keep their job?

How Trump didn’t believe Annie’s complaints about the party planner fiasco is beyond me. He had to be watching the same video we were.

I think ultimately, since it was for charity, Trump picked Joan to help even out the winnings for both charities. All in all a good way to help everyone.

  • NYC

Joan won because Trump walks in the same circles in NYC as her; Trump’s in-law is on the board of Joan’s charity AND, Mark Burnett, the producer of the Apprentcie is the producer for Joan’s new show ” How’d You Get So Rich”, which i will never watch.

I have watched the Apprentice for years, but might not due to this travesty.

  • Linda

That was terrible. I have watched every apprentice but that is the last one. Trump let Rivers be despicable 9both of them)and never once stopped her. But Jesse said Rodman was “stupid” and he stopped that right away. AND Jesse was being caring. I will NEVER watch another Apprentice. Annie was robbed!!!

  • VB

Yes! Those of us involved in charity work, both volunteers and in need of help are deeply, deeply grateful for Celebrity Apprentice! And even tho Joan Rivers’ fighting, strategically or not, was horribly painful to watch … so are those who needed her help and are dying of life ravaging diseases of AIDS and CANCER … horribly painful to watch someone excruciatingly die before natural life-span. And yes perhaps in future business classes, Joan’s behavior will be an example … a good role model on how-not-to-behave in a real business personal conflict situations! But, she is a great warrior!

For those of you who want a quick review of 2009 Celebrity Apprentice season:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Apprentice_(U.S._season_8)

Each contestant was very brave to each bring their personal life on the line to help others!

If I was fighting in a war, I’d follow either Joan or Annie to and until wherever!

Jesse G. (good-guy mountain man) James was a truth-teller and smart worker, but unfortunately seemed to have gotten cabin fever inside NYC and lost-it on Clint Black towards the end of the season.
Brande Roderick was playing well with others while working as hard as Joan and Annie.
Clint Black is a heroic lover much more than a fighter! And, a damn good sport!
Melissa Rivers was a bad sport, even tho she worked as hard as the hardest workers.
Melissa should’ve been fired earlier, but was luckily spared by Tionne Watkins’ surrender.
Herschel Walker (another truth-teller) was the best team player, most often seemed to have the best ideas, but unfortunately had a bad idea while he was project manager.
Natalie Gulbis was mostly a good player, but is still enigmatic to me!
Brian McKnight stayed manned-up to the end even when he accepted his fate. Gone too soon!
Both Dennis Rodman and Tom Green were helpful, entertaining, and interesting foils.
Kudos to Claudia, Scott, Khloe and Andrew too.

Thanks greatly to all who contribute to life-struggling causes and solutions! Thank you!

  • Lee

What a shame and disappointment the finale was for the viewers. Clearly Annie was the winner and outperformed Joan by a long shot. The favitism Donald Trump showed Joan was so blantant. I have always been a fan of apprentice but will never watch again because this show is rigged.

  • Mateo

Man~ what an obvious miscarriage of justice this show has displayed! I’ll never bother to watch that crap again. Annie Duke was obviously better than Joan Rivers in every task, in every way. Plus, I don’t even know why Trump brought in the last C.A. to narrow the competition to the final two, when he only ignored his advice to 86 Joan Rivers (and keep Jesse)anyway. Lame! No wonder nobody really respects Donald Trump.

  • Bren

I was disgusted by the finale of the Apprentice. Joan River’s was highly offensive and un-proffessional! Annie Duke was the clear winner.
When they said that Joan Rivers is a role model I could not get over the shock.
What kind of role model personally attacks another human being so malicously. I liked Joan prior to the show and had never even heard of Annie . . . I can honestly say now that I have lost all respect for Joan and think Annie is an amazing woman! Joan Rivers behaved like a child and should be very ashamed of her actions. It is clear that she has raised mellisa to be just as much of a psycho. They both need to get on some meds!

  • Bob

This is the most disgusting defeat I have ever seen on TV. Annie should have won hands down. She kicked Joan’s butt in almost every way except one. Joan is old and is famous, I guess that is enough. Well you can take famous and send it where the sun doesn’t shine. Annie outclassed, out performed and was a much better player than Joan. She generated three times the money for charity on the final task vs Joan. Joan spent as much money on her face as she generated for charity, she needs to spend at least $100,000 more because looking at her makes me want to puke. Her daughter Melissa gives me the same reaction!

Joan slammed the entire poker industry. Does she know that some poker players give all their winnings to charity? There is a great deal of sportsmanship and class seen at every table (except by the poker brat). I would rather hang out with the poker payers than the circles Donald and Joan hang with any day. I am not into fake, political, two faced people.

Joan was such a B____ she made Annie’s decorator quit. Anybody that didn’t see this (like Donald himself) are the biggest idiots on the planet.

I liked all of the seasons of the Apprentice, but will never watch again after seeing this one. Donald changed the show to go for ratings not performance of players. Jesse and Annie should have been the final two or at least Brande and Annie. Joan quit. Donald fired other people for giving up, why not Joan? Donald is no better than Joan and I have lost all respect for him too.

    Side Note:

If you are rich enough to take a helicopter and have a chaffer that drives you everywhere than you need to get poured a tall glass of shut the hell up when it comes to drunk driving. Don’t get me wrong I am very much against it, but when someone is trying to correct the mistake she made in the PAST she should not be fired for it. Khloe’s charity was the Brent Shapiro Foundation for Alcohol and Drug Awareness. Donald, do you see the charity she was playing for, dumb ass.

  • kitty

What?!?!? The show is already over?!?!?! Darn it! I guess I missed every episode because this show is really stupid. But I like Joan Rivers though.

  • Becky

I thought Joan had consistent funny ideas. I’ve seen no one mention the fact that Annie and the blond bimbo really did ignore Melissa’s good ideas. So when Melissa talked about this she was correct. She lost it when fired, but her feelings were correct on how they treated her. Many times Joan’s ideas were the final good touch on some of their team’s project manager projects. Annie thought so much of herself, I couldn’t believe. It’s great to have confidence in oneself but this woman was unbelievable.
