Hollie Steel: Pressure of Britain’s Got Talent 2009

Hollie Steel: Pressure of Britain’s Got Talent 2009
It was the last of the semi-finals tonight in “Britain’s Got Talent” and it was 12 year old Aidan Davis that won with the public vote and went through to the final on Saturday night. Then it was left down to singer Greg Pritchard and young singer Hollie Steel to face the judge’s votes.

Hollie Steel: Pressure of Britain’s Got Talent 2009

But earlier in the show, when it was Hollie Steel’s turn to perform, she broke down in tears. According to stv.tv, Hollie seemed full of confidence when she first started to sing “Edelweiss” from “The Sound of Music.” She then seemed to forget her words.

Hollie then had a few brief tears, which she did appear to overcome at first. Then the pressure got too much and she burst into tears again. Judge Amanda Holden went up on stage to comfort her. The performance was then stopped.

Hollie then pleaded that she was given another chance to sing. Simon Cowell then promised the tearful young singer that they would find time for her to perform again. She then returned to the stage and made it through. She was then chosen to go to the final.

Greg Pritchard was robbed. He has a unique voice- why do producers insists on filling the final with run of the mill, average singers…when you have that beautifull and rare voice of Greg, the male soprano?
And with Holy cracking once, what is to say she won’t crack up again , and again…and again? Why, when it was between Greg and Hollie, the judges didn’t think of that?
Was Greg too much of a threat for ‘the chosen one’? Why was Greg shunned from clips, news, even BGT semi shoots? Why was camera allways avoiding him? It’s all a farce and BGT can come tumbling down for all I care.

Kids shows should be separated from main show! Hollie is not ready for a public show

    Hollie broke down on stage

She returned and stunned the audience

I would like to register my irritation that Hollie Steel was allowed a second chance in the semi-final of Britain’s Got Talent. Yes, she is 10 years old and yes, she was nervous. But does that mean that she should be allowed to perform again? True that when she sang again she did very well; I don’t think many others could have gone up to perform for a second time. How many of the other acts, if they had broken down in their performance, would have been given a second chance? I think that if children are able to deal with pressure, they should be have a chance at winning. If not, should they be entered? I feel that the disruption to her act should not have been what got her through to the final and that I am not alone in thinking this.

  • liz

Another thing that strikes me as unfair is that they told Callum (boy singer doing Jungle BOok medley) that he has time to come back another year and the ’2 grand’ team may not make it another year.

If they can tell Callum to come back again, they should have done the same to Hollie. At least Callum completed his act though he was clearly uncomfortable being half naked on stage.

  • Lawrence

Shaheen got a rare 2nd go at it in the audition and the judges basically gave him a 3rd shot by voting him into the finals. He keeps making the wrong song choices for his voice, but nobody is complaining about that.

These are children after all and I don’t see a problem with Hollie getting a 2nd chance. Many repeatedly come back and audition for BGT every year and George Sampson won it all on his 2nd try. Adults are and should be held to a different standard. I don’t particularly like the judges talking to children like they are adults either, but BGT is also a reality show.

  • Marianne

I don’t appreciate remarks that I have just read about Hollie Steel. She is 10 years old, for God’s sake. Give me and her a break and for that matter, Susan Boyle as well. It takes a lot of guts to perform in public and these contestants are NOT PROFESSIONAL!!!!! They are doing what their heart’s desire is, singing, dancing, etc. Greg Pritchard handled himself very well. I believe a talent scout will contact him, as will Hollie and Susan as well. Please let these people do what they “want” to do — perform for your enjoyment!!!

  • DDT

This isn’t really at talent show, is it? It’s a popularity contest. They send the granddad/granddaughter duo (can we say sappy?) ahead instead of a really talented youngster and say ‘he can wait another year’….but the next day they send a far less talented youngster to the finals instead of someone with an awesome voice.
I feel sorry for Hollie getting upset and such, but did they do anything for Jamie Pugh?
I’m starting to think this whole thing is rigged and they are advancing people who will boost the show’s ratings with viewers.

However, what will they do with the finals? Does anyone think Hollie can actually win? I don’t….

Meanwhile – is there a scholarship fund I can send money to for Greg?

  • Glynis

I agree that Greg suddenly seemed to get very little coverage – but he was doomed as soon as Hollie was allowed to sing again – and he probably was aware of that when he sang hardly a level playing field -and if Holie got a second chance why any of the other acts including Greg who had to both control his vioce and an out of control prop ie a cloak that was threatening to pull him off the stage

  • Heather

We love the show usually, but were very disturbed by Hollie getting through. What were they thinking??! She was distraught, over-tired and overcome and will be again, even if she can get through the actual stage performance well tonight. She has many years ahead of her to build up confidence and it is cruel to put her through that again. She should have been protected. i know she demanded a second chance, but a 10 year old does not know what is best for hereself. She should have been tucked up in bed.

Also Greg was superb and original…for goodness sake!

  • Wendy Foster

I think Hollie is far too young and fragile and if I was her Mother I would withdraw her from the contest, I can’t help thinking of tragic young stars such as Lena Zavaroni

  • sue cook

I love watching Britain’s Got Talent but was absolutely appalled last night that a child could be reduced to a gibbering wreck and then a disgusting pushy mother asked for her to have a second chance. I bet none of the other contestants would get another chance. Please please stop children under taking part a they cannot cope and are just a tool used by atrocious parents. She might well have performed the second time but no child should have to undergo that kind of treatment from a parent.

  • sue cook

The treatment of Greg last evening was really poor – he has a rare talent and should have gone through – not Hollie with the twee vote.

I hope they give Susan Boyle the same kind of chance as she is clearly nervous too and look at the pressure on her. I hope she wins.

  • Rebekka

I totally agree with the the thought that Holly ‘robbed’ wonderful Grieg of hid place in the final. She will crack again….unless it was a put up job and she cracked to get sympathy. I was told i had a wonderful voice as a child and sang in lots of places with large audiences, OK so not on TV, but, and here is my point, I could also cry when I forgot my words, as she OBVIOUSLY did, and then she cried! That wonderful male soprano lost out cos Simon couldnt see how he could market him!, or is that a double bluff too? Or am
I seeing conspiracies everywhere? I certainly wont be watching the next series.

  • Lucy

I went through the bloody roof yesterday, it is so unfair, yes she was nervous but what about connie talbot!?? Did she crack, did she go into hysterics? NO, I bet if the guy at the end ( Greg, Who was better than anyone and was unique and completly rare) froze he wouldent be given another chance, Eh, Eh!!??

  • Gemma

Hollie should not have got through. Yes she’s a very good singer for her age and will probably go on to have a career in the music industry, but she’s too young to cope with the pressure. She shouldn’t have been given another chance to sing just because she had a paddy on stage, and the judges basically said they were putting her through because she managed to overcome her nerves 2nd time around. I bet if Jamie Pugh or Greg were given another shot they would have done better as well! Ridiculous.

  • jane.c

Contestants of BGT are getting better every year and we should be grateful that we can enjoy such great family entertaintment. Do allow reasonable judgement as we are not perfect. People make mistakes…give them opportunity to exercise their skills to make UK on the edge. Contestants do their acts to entertain us and let enjoy what they do during this grim time.

  • http://www.AuthorsRegister.com/deegordon Dee

BGT should have a separate programme for children – Hollie was definitely an inappropriate choice, and grossly unfair that she alone was given a second chance. How the judges could call her brave when all she did was have a tantrum …

  • Jools

I still can’t believe that the little lad who played the drums was not put through to the finals….In my opinion, whilst Hollie and Callum were good, he was different and very talented…shame on you BGT for getting this one wrong.

    Stavros Flatley to win…

  • kangaroo

I thought it was car-crash tv last night and left me very uncomfortable watching Hollie break down more than once….and ok to let her go on again was probably the only thing for them to do unless they wanted to be savaged in the papers today but if it had been Jamie Pugh who broke down half way through his semi-final performance would they have given him a second chance?…I think not!..I think its because she is just a child…and I also think poor Greg didnt have a chance after that and he should really be in the final…He is definitely a unique talent and was far better and I thought they were looking for something different, not run of the mill acts…and personally I think no one under 16 should be allowed enter the competition…They are children for goodness sake…and should be let be children instead of been pushed by over ambitious parents….and now omg we have to watch her again tonight….I will be cringing in my seat…What were the judges thinking?…to put her through that again?….It shouldnt have happened….Anyway….Diversity to win fingers crossed.

  • jane

I am fuming after just watching the repeat of BGT. A precocious child with tantrums(and a controlling mother) have unfairly won through to the Final tonight and thereby denying a place for a very talented singer. What were the panel of so-called experts thinking of? Is this a talent contest or a load of slushy emotional garbage centred round under 12′s who in my mind should be tucked up in bed.

  • Marty

Maybe it’s time these talent shows come to an end.
People seem to forget that these contestants are human beings, and I think we can all see now what devastating consequences they can lead to.
If they’re not very good, they’re ridiculed.
If they’re very talented, they’re ridiculed.
Sure, these shows can lead to good things for some of the contestants, but they can also destroy people.

  • johnmunch

Hollie Steel should never have gone throw, and her Mother needs to be looked at for what I think she has done to this spoilt little girl, and its sick how people like Marianne ( who sounds like her mum ) can say she don’t appreciate remarks, well this is what YOU done by putting Her there and the dirty trick’s you have put together to try and win this show. You do not deserve kids.

  • DDT

Someone who wants to defend Hollie Steel needs to hold her to the same standards that other contestants, especially children, were held to. Shaky voices, little mistakes….they happened to other contestants. Did others get second chances? If they did well, did they commended for their courage? Did other people overcome problems in their life to get on the show also?

Shame on the judges. Shame on the sympathy votes for people who are talented…but NOT as talented as others. This supposed to be about talent, not who has the best sob story.

  • Jenny

Hollie is undoubtedly a brilliant singer, but she is only ten years old…Personally, I think it’s almost cruel to put her through that amount of intensive pressure at that age. I felt so completely awful watching the show, my heart totally went out to her. What a brave kid. But I don’t think she should have got through!! It will be even more attention and pressure in the final! She’s not ready for it at this age anyway. She has years and years ahead of her to have a career in singing, but she doesn’t need to be shoved in front of cameras and millions of people so young.
Her breakdown – though completely understandable etc – put the judges in a very unfair position. I mean, they kind of had to choose her after that didn’t they! If they hadn’t, Hollie would have lost it all over again, and imagine their guilt at that.
I think that it would have been a lot fairer to put Greg through. Hollie – in my opinion – needs to be let off the hook and allowed to be a just a little girl until she’s grown up and feels ready to make a career from singing. Anyway, Greg has a unique voice; it’s incredible. This is his big chance, whereas Hollie is only ten, she will have years of opportunities! Even if Hollie hadn’t got through, she’d have fans, record deals etc. I think the judges made the wrong decision, and I don’t think (with all due respect) her parents should have put her through it in the first place.

  • ENGLISH

Was going to vote for the boy who was breakdancing ,but just read his cousin DEMI’s comments above, all that pure,da boss, and ALL THOSE BITCHES GONNA LUV YA. all that hoody gun cultured street talk you can imagine what there like WHEN OBVIOUSLY a child is allowed access to a pc and write bitches etc as praise to her cousin, no wonder this country is going down the toilet. sorry but voting for two grand now.

  • Georgie

I Think Holly Getting Throught To The Final Is Kind Of Stupid Coz She Cant Get Anywhere If She Has To Have Her Mummy On Stage And Do Her Performance Twice To Get Over Her Nerves But She Was Brave To Cum Bak On Stage !

  • ligokon from the USA

I can’t believe Hollie Steele was chosen by the judges over Greg Pritchard even she forgot the words of the song. How can that be possible?

  • http://www.almacarey,com Alma Carey

Greg Pritchard has everything going for him, his handsomeness, his charm and his incredible, wonderful talent!!!!!!!!!
    He’s STAR MATERIAL!!!!!
He should be in the finals!!!!!!
Wrong to pick someone who didn’t have stage presence over him!!!!
    WRONG!!!!!!!!
    PUT GREG BACK IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lacey

Simon Cowell has always made the executive decisions, the producers said, “no more time” but Simon over-rides that. He’s ultimately in charge of everything. He didn’t want Greg having a shot at winning cos he doesn’t have a clue on what to do with him, therefore scenes of Greg were minimal throught BGT compared to the other acts.(All that was Simon’s doing). Even Greg mentioned this unfairness briefly on the show. Greg Pritchard is a phenomenum, has this country ever had something like that?! ! His last performance was utterly amazing! ! He reminds me of Adam Lambert American Idol cos they’re both super talented, weird & very theatrical. I love the fact that he just looks happy & smiling all the time, he seems a very likeable young man. I would love to see Adam Lambert & Greg Pritchard record a single together or perform live, can you imagine what that would be like. People that know about the business such as Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson & Sharon Osbourne, would’ve put Greg through in another case scenario.

  • http://www.jumpsbond.com jumps bond

yeah,i like greg.really..hollie should not have gone thru

  • BGT Critic

    Shame on BGT.
    Shame on Simon Cowell.
    Shame on Hollie Steel`s mother.

The last semifinals were a farce and an insult to the public. The actions compromised the integrity of the show and its contestants, as well as making it very clear that there is blatant favoritism and little regard for rules and fairness.

Greg Pritchard did an outstanding performance in spite of being time-crunched BECAUSE of Hollie Steel. The little girl is too young and obviously inapt for these kind of shows, and showing condescending sympathy will do nothing for her career.

  • BERYL

Ithink that diversity were brilliant I would have liked Susan to win but i dont think she would have coped on the Royal night. She was very tense until Diversity won then she relaxed.

  • Glynis

I think that Beryl has a point – winning BGT might have been the worst thing possible to happen to Susan – the hype will hopefully decrease now – she will undoubtedly still have the opportunity to make appearances as a professional singer and produce albums. Diversity were great and probably much better able to take the ‘hype’ that nearly seemed to overwhelm Susan. Does anyone know if the third place semi finalists get included in the Live show? – I would like to see the talented Ventriloquist and love to see Greg Pritchard perform live

  • Andyy

Hollie Steele should never have been chosen over Greg, he has such a unique voice & was sidelined all because Hollie wanted to throw a bratty tantrum. She did well to come back & sing but she should not have been allowed to come back again to perform in the first place, if that was anybody else no way in hell would they have been allowed, shame on BGT & their rules. Fake tears or no tears shall i say, bad decision from judges i don’t know how they didn’t notice the fakeness & how can they call her the bravest girl in the world? there is nothing brave about having a bratty tantrum! Spoilt little girl.Tut Tut Tut!!!

  • http://Google Heather

Was absolutely disgusted when I watched the repeat of Fridays seme-final and Holly got put through instead of Greg. She acted like a spoilt brat who looked like she was going to carry on crying until she got her own way – which she did in the end. There were loads of other contestents who admitted they were nervous – even Gregg looked very nervous but he didnt ask for a second chance. I know Holly is only 10 years old but she CHOSE to go on the show and be judged – no-one made her (maybe her mother!) Shame on the panel and voters for putting her through with a sympathy vote. I am pleased that diversity won though – had lots of competition with Susan, Julian, Sean and Aiden I thought. Good luck in the future

  • http://google Fiona

I just wanted to add my two-pen’th.. Havin watched Hollie in the audition I thought she had an amazing voice for a 10year old and thoroughly deserved her place in the semi.. Greg was also fantastic in his audition. not something you hear very often these days. Yes, there are male sopranos around but probably not with Greg’s ‘look’. Unfortunately, Greg did NOT perform well in the semi final. It must’ve been incredibly difficult for him with that ridiculous cape but despite that, he could have made it much easier on himself by not trying to alternate between the two different voices, which really didn’t work… Yes, he IS very different, but on the night, his vocals were just not good enough! You cldn’t tell what note he was singing a lot of the time and I’m sorry, but he was out of tune.. Having said all that I would like to see more of him, as he does definitely have talent.. As for Hollie, it was NOT a case of forgetting her words and I wouldn’t actually call that a tantrum.. she said herself that when she heard herself introduced as having nerves of ‘steele’ it really put her off.. she is just 10 years old and was obviously feeling the pressure.. her voice was totally different from that at the audition.. she must’ve heard what she was sounding like (and believe me when that starts to happen it just make you doubly worse!) and just not known how to cope.. Just imagine breaking down completely in front of millions & millions of people, and then being told you’re not going to have the chance to perform again! It must have been heart-breaking for her! You DO have to take into account that fact that she is so young. she was better 2nd time round, but still not brilliant.. quite shaky.. but her vocals WERE better than Gregs on the night… and by gum did she give a stunning perfomance at the final.. Absolutely beautiful.. And I do feel the judges were justified in having put her through.. IF she’d broken down again, or sounded like she had at the semi, then mayb I’d've felt differently, but as it was, I was charmed and moved by her singing.. Greg also deserves to do well however, it’s just a pity he ruined it for himself by trying to be a bit too clever and it not paying off.

  • Ann

Poor Hollie didn’t have a tantrum, she cried for heaven’s sake. Anyone that calls that a tantrum has clearly been spared from witnessing one. Also, the child herself asked to do it again, the mother wanted her to because that is what her child wanted. Fake tears? Never. She wouldn’t have done that – there was no guarantee that she would have had another chance. Just because your favourite missed out because of what happened doesn’t make it wrong.

  • http://google Fiona

Greg didn’t ask for a 2nd chance, because he thought he’d done OK!! Like Ann says, that was NOT a tantrum from Holly, she was not screaming and kicking and shouting IT’S NOT FAIR! was she? Just please please, could I have another go… She heard her own voice sounding totally unlike the way she wanted to sing, and that is what put her off.. she sounded like that right from the off! not half way through her song.. Holly does have a very beautiful voice, and proved this in the final. Greg is very different, but DID choose the wrong song for his voice at the Semi.. I also feel that Susan Boyle is over-rated.. Sorry, but she is.. Her voice is perfectly OK, just not ‘Amazing’ as is being made out.. I do hope she gets herself sorted out though.. You don’t wish that sort of situation or experience on anybody..

  • http://www.google.com Jane Mitchell

Hollie’s cute, she’s gorgeous and she sings like an angel! If she releases a CD, I’d be one of the first to buy a copy of it – with her autograph on it. She’s not a spoilt brat – she’s just one very talented young lady out to fulfil her dream of performing on stage and she’s achieved it. I’m surprised she hadn’t won; if I’d been on the judges’ panel, I’d have definitely voted her the BGT 2009 winner! And what an honour for Hollie to be invited to join the BGT Live tour.
