Julian Smith, the Saxophone and Britain’s Got Talent 2009

Julian Smith, the Saxophone and Britain's Got Talent 2009
I was blown away when I watched “Britain’s Got Talent” last night. All I can say is that I thought saxophonist Julian Smith was sensational. And he made it through to Saturday night’s final when he won with the viewers vote.

Julian Smith, the Saxophone and Britain’s Got Talent 2009

When I first saw the 39-year old musician in his audition, I thought he was good then. But then in last night’s semi-final, he absolutely blew me away with an amazing rendition of “All By Myself.” According to dailycontributor.com, Amanda Holden said he was the best act so far.

Twelve year old Sally and her 76-year old grandfather, who are named Two Grand beat child star Callum Francis when they both faced the judge’s vote. And after making Amanda Holden cry they got through to the final.

See Julian’s performance video below.

Julian. Both of your performances have brought me to tears. You make that sax talk. If there is any justice and this competition is based on real talent then you should walk it. You are just brilliant.

  • Julian Cauvin

Great Job! Watch Perform in Seattle September 2009 at the Parmamont Theater.

I watched every show from day one. Susan Boyle was brilliant. And then came Julian Smith. As far as I am concerned Susan comes 2nd to this guy. He is humble and so genuine. I liked him as soon as I saw him and even better after hearing him play. I can’t get enough of his music and I think he will go a long way even he doesn’t win.
He is my all time favourite.
    Go for it Julian.

  • Ellie Summers

Seeing Julian’s performances just inspires me to work harder on my saxophone playing. He is possibly the most talented sax player I have heard live and I hope he releases an album very soon.

  • Jeannie

Julian Smith is amazing! He might not have won Britain’s Got Talent but he truly is a winner – I’m a fan of Kenny Gee; Julian, you win hands down, I’ll buy your first album. Best of luck – although you don’t need it:) FABULOUS MUSIC – pulls right at the heart strings! Hope you are reading these blogs Julian

Julian Smith is fantastic!! He’s an adorable, sweet, humble and gentle soul. I hope that his talent brings him and his family much success and happiness.
I played saxaphone as a kid, but no way did I play like Julian!!
This senior citizen wishes you many blessings!!

  • VMOH

    Julian Smith is wonderful!!

  • http://www.skyerstravel.com Skyers in NC USA

I live in North Carolina in the US and I can’t believe that Great Britain would vote a dance team in to perform for the Queen of England. Unbelieveable. Julian Smith was clearly a winner and should play for the Queen and Susan Boyle should perform for the Queen. Not a Group of Street Dancers. Great Britain, you let the World down. At least the US got it right and voted for Barack Obama. We are smarter and have more class. I have no respect for the English anymore.

  • lizzie

Skyers you snob! In Britain today we are obviously a bit more modern than you and recognise talent whether it is in the form of “classy” singers or “street dancers”. And I thought it was us brits who were supposed to have a problem with the class divide!

  • john dudley

There have been a number of artists over the years who have just played an instrument. I recall Eddie Calvert – the man with the golden trumpet, James Galway, Satchmo and other great musicians on many different instruments. You are there with them at the top. I wish you well and look forward to seeing and hearing you play again.

    Julian

Now I know how the voice of Saxophone is…I really amazing…

  • shigeru

I partially agree with \”Skyers in NC USA\”.
Julian Smith gets my #1 vote, Susan Boyle #2.
I also disappointed British public voted street dancers as winners.
If Susan Boyle kept her own just like the day we saw her first time, I like her.
But she has changed very little, this little change might have damaged her image.
Julian Smith is humble, cool and gentleman any time.
Julian Smith and Susan Boyle\’s music stays every one\’s heart forever, but not street dancing.
If any knows Julian Smith fan club web site, please let me know.
    Thanks

  • Debbie

Absolutely fantastic performances from Julian Smith on Britains Got Talent. We need a fan club website, and I thoroughly look forward to him bringing out a CD. IT’S A MUST !

Someone give the guy a break and give him a record deal…..

So sad he didn’t win, but I’m sure there are better things on the horizon for him.

  • Janneke

Where can I order a CD with Julian’s music?
    I love it!!

  • lizzie

I can’t understand all this anti street dance stuff- Diversity and Flawless were awesome and nobody can deny their talent; surely?? And by the way, I do like Susan Boyle, but her rendition of Memory was hopeless. She went out of tune several time and was wobbly and her opening note cracked. Liked her dreamed a dream alot though.

  • VMOH

Lizzie, you are right on about the USA being a country of snobs! Talent is talent regardless of who possesses it.
Thanks, lizzie!! By the way, I live in the USA and I am not always proud of the citizens of this country!

  • lizzie

Oh, and ps Skyers, it’s ok that you don’t respect the Brits anymore, because believe it or not most of us don’t care what the americans think of us. We aren’t about to take seriously any cultural criticism from you lot thanks very much!

  • Candace

I loved Julian and Susan, though I think Susan should have sung a different song this time. Shaheen was good, too. Hollie would have been great if her nerves had not gotten to her, but she is only 10 and will do better later. But that dance troupe Diversity just left me cold. What do you call that? Break dance, street dance, electro-techno, what? I doubt the Queen will like them, either. Teen-agers, yeah, but the queen is no teen.

  • Neelie

What a Diverse society we have, and I’m so proud to be part of it. Talent is talent worldwide, and the amount of time that the ‘street dancers’ put in with rehearsing is exhausting, it certainly shows committment, their routines were amasing, this goes for ‘Flawless’ as well. I would have loved Julian Smith to win, but it wasn’t meant to be, but his future will be bright and I’ll certainly be buying his cd when its released.
So please stop the bickering between nations, it really isn’t called for. Any personal digs should be swept under the carpet never to be commented on again.
    DIVERSITY WERE THE RIGHTFUL WINNERS….X

  • Judith

I’m from the US AND from North Carolina. I thought all three acts were terrific. I hope very much that Julian will have a CD coming out as I would love to buy it. I also would second the question about a JS fan site. Admittedly I was taken with Susan Boyle but I’m not about to bad mouth any other performer. There are ALL different. I think Julian is terric but I think Diversity is extremely talented and hard working and their choreography and performance was wonderful. I probably won’t have an opportunity to see them perform but I wish them well and look forward to hearing about their success. As to Susan and Julian … I look forward very much to buying their CDs.
For the record … there are snobs everywhere. :)

I think Julian Smith is totally AWESOME!! I live in the USA, California and I loved all of his performances. I too am a Kenny G fan but Julian tops even that!! Does anyone know if Julian is going to make a CD? It’s hard to get information over here about what people are doing over “there”. I would love to have his CD. Wow… he just blows me away! I have listened to his YouTube videos so many times over that I’m going to wear them out!!! Julian Rocks!!!!

  • Aled

What is so special about julian smith, he plays simple pieces nicely as far as I can tell. I do not have anything against him, but surely to show of talent there has to be some degree of difficulty to the piece?
or am I missing the point and he is doing something very special?

I’m a very musical person, I play clarinet and piano to a high standard, but do not understand why everyone thinks he is the greatest player ever…
can someone explain in clear terms.

  • Mags

Julian Smith beats even Kenny G for sweetness of tone. Never heard a better.
Such enormous talent. Also can’t wait for an album. Enjoyed his jam with Kenny at the Albert Hall. Julian had no trouble at all keeping up.
Good to have support from the USA and Canad. Thanks.
