French Open 2009 Final: Will Roger Federer be there?
Roger Federer looks to have a clean run at taking the French Open title, and if he achieves it then the all 13-time Grand Slam champion would have gone around the block at all the majors for a career. The only thing standing in his way is just two more matches.

French Open 2009 Final: Will Roger Federer be there?

According to Fox Sports, things have been made a little easier for Federer, as Rafael Nadal dropped out in the fourth round. The other two players who could have spoiled things were Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic, but they have also been sent packing out of the French Open.

Personally I do hope that Roger Federer wins, as this would truly make him the greatest ever tennis player. Three other men now stand in his way, Juan Martin Del Potro, who he faces in the semifinals, Robin Soderling and finally Fernando Gonzalez.

Do you think Roger Federer will be in the final?

  • Steve

Yes, Federer will make the final because Del Potro is not nearly mentally tough enough nor does he have enough overall game to beat him in a match this big. However, I believe that both Soderling and Gonzalez can beat Federer. In fact, I suspect that the winner of the Gonzalez-Soderling semi will beat Federer in the final. I would hate to see Federer equal Sampras’ total of 14 Grand Slams. Federer just isn’t that fun to watch anymore. He used to be much more dynamic. Now, he seems to be hanging on more on willpower than game. I still believe strongly that Sampras in his prime would beat Federer in his prime. No doubt about it.

    Steve,
You are forgetting that Federer beat Sampras at Wimbledon in 2001. This was when Sampras was still the King of grass, and Federer was a nobody. Whet’s more, Federer beat Sampras in his own serve-and-volley game.
Even if Federer does not win RG this year, I think Federer is head and shoulders above — four straight RG finals (Sampras did not even make one final), 20 straight semis in grand slams, five consecutive Wimbledons and US Opens. More importantly, Federer has the most complete game we have ever seen in tennis history. No one, I repeat no one, can come close in shot-making brilliance.
