Wimbledon 2009: Venus Williams wins first match in straight sets

Last year’s Ladies Wimbledon Champion Venus Williams was back on center court today to begin her campaign to win Wimbledon 2009. Her first match was an easy win where she won in straight sets to Stefanie Voegele, 6-3, 6-2. Venus Williams is now into the second round and one-step closer to regaining her title at the All England Club.

According to NJ.com, it looks as if the poor form that Venus Williams had shown at the French Open had come back to haunt her. Williams had double-faulted in the opening game and had to fight off two break points. Then it was as if someone had turned a switch on, as Venus recovered and showed Voegele a master class in how to play tennis.

Jelena Jankovic also progressed to the second round today, she did struggle at first, but managed to overcome a number of errors to finally beat Julia Goerges, 6-4, 7-6 (0), in the tiebreaker. Caroline Wozniacki also made it to the second round, beating Date Krumm 5-7, 6-3, 6-1.

We now wait for British number one, Andy Murray to see if he can mount his battle to win Wimbledon 2009.
