Swiss ace Roger Federer, proved yesterday that he is indeed one of the world’s best players, when he defeated American Andy Roddick in the gripping, five set men’s singles final of the Wimbledon 2009 tennis championship, which has given him his record 15th grand slam title.
The match, which lasted a grueling four hours and eighteen minutes, saw Federer take victory with 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6 and 16-14. The Centre Court crowd, which included Pete Sampras, may well have been on the edge of the seats throughout the entire match.
According to theage.com.au, Roddick had a couple of sloppy shots in the third set tie-break that seemed to prove costly for the American. It looked as though the match had taken its toll on Federer though, as he seemed more relieved than elated when receiving his trophy.
