Bruno Movie Review: Shock and entertainment

I had seen a few trailers of the Bruno movie over recent weeks and have to say was looking forward to the movie. The moment that we watched the opening scenes, we knew exactly we what were in for over the next hour and half give or take a few minutes. There have been a number of negative reviews for Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest movie, but that did not stop it reaching No.1 at the Box Office.

There were a few moments in the film where I had thought that Cohen had gone over the top, but that is what we have come to expect from the controversial actor. Brüno is a flamboyant Austrian fashionista and does what he can to try to succeed in LA, and from that moment, we were shocked at just how far the character went, like the Ron Paul scene.

Bruno Movie Review: Shock and entertainment

According to MTV, the movie did very well at the Box Office this weekend taking $30.4 million, this better than Borat, as that did just $26.5 million in the opening weekend. Brüno has now started to stumble since its release on Friday, dropping 39 percent by Saturday.

If you have seen Brüno, please offer us your review of the movie.

    I saw Bruno last weekend.
Here’s what to expect: A hysterically funny movie which is arguably a cross between soft(ish) porn at times and social satire at its best!

Definitely, this has been the worst movie I have ever seen. I did not considered a comedy… Bad taste, extremely vulgar… Waste of money seeing it; I left the movie theater before the movie ended.

  • Danny

I’m a big fan of Sasha Baron Cohen – or at least I was before seeing Bruno. I thought the movie could go either way – Be as sharp as Bruno was on the Ali G show or try to be even more vulgar and over the top than the movie Borat. Unfortunately, it was the latter.
In my opinion, Sasha Baron Cohen’s greatness comes to life when he provokes his guests to behave out of their comfort zone and say what they would not dare otherwise. To me, most of the scenes in the movie seems fake and rehearsed. Running around naked, sticking household tools in all holes is nothing but a cheap sell out to grab the young audience’s attention.

If you agree with me don’t watch this movie -it will only hurt the respect you have for Sasha Baron Cohen.

This film is ABSOLUTE GARBAGE! WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME! I cannot believe they are allowed to show those extremely inappropriate parts…If I wanted to watch porn, I would have stayed home instead of paying $ to watch this piece of crap. I think this movie could have done well without the inappropriate scenes. The trailer looked funny and I think everyone was shocked when they saw all those penis’s on the big screen and the porn scenes…

ABSOLUTE GARBAGE!! THIS FILM SHOULD BE BANNED FROM ALL THEATERS!!..
OR THEY SHOULD HAVE CUT ALL THE PORN SCENES AND HAVE AN UNCUT OR UNRATED DVD LIKE HOW HAROLD AND KUMAR AND AMERICAN PIE MOVIES HAVE DONE…

  • jlou endaya

PURE GARBAGE!!! WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY!! IF ANYONE WANTS TO WATCH THIS JUST WATCH SOME GAY PORN….SERIOUSLY…I CANT BELIEVE THIS IS ALLOWED IN THEATRES….ABSOLUTE CRAP!!!EXTREMELY INAPPROPRIATE….

  • mavis

ABSOLUTE RUBBISH!!!! i do not reccomd it to anyone. i was a massive borat fan and this movie was highly dissappointing. DO not waste your money. Too many penis scenes by far.

Wow. I am still discombobulated from the flick.

Sacha Cohen is both a genius and completely insane. Not to mention lucky to be alive. These antics could get anyone killed. Flirting with so called Palestinian terrorists, American rednecks and political candidates… he should at least be well spanked and he is when a dominatrix gets him in her bedroom. That is a very satisfying moment!

The fact that Cohen can pull off such outrageous hoaxes while never leaving character and do so with such conviction and a straight face is what I find over-the-top amusing. How can he keep from laughing? Oh no, he’s not going to do that…is he?

Of course it was offensive. And while I laughed my ass off I was also insulted and squirmed in my seat. But isn’t that the point? Setting up Texas Congressman Ron Paul (the once candidate for President whom I really respect) was sad. Yet I found Bruno easier to take than Borat, — thankfully no bags of poop were delivered to the dinner table in this one. Just a lot of sexual innuendo and I do mean “in your end oh.” (Anal sex). Have things changed? I was under the impression that certain body parts were a no-no in America’s cinemas (there are several close up shots of his shaved penis.)

Bruno comes up against every social more we have; Miss Manners would have a coronary! My advice: don’t go unless you think you’ll find it funny or you truly enjoy being offended.

Had a gift certificate for movie ticket. Went in, sat down, watched 20 min. of movie. Walked out, best thing I’ve done in my life. Life’s too short to waste it in such film. Sorry – but those are my feelings. (At least I got my money back).

  • Andy

As a movie, Bruno went places that Borat wouldn’t dare. Anytime that while sitting in a movie theatre you can hear a woman sitting in the front row screaming, “No! NO! Don’t do that!!!!” at the sreen, you know it’s going to be intense. Fewer people are going to appreciate this than Borat. Some of the jokes are too dark and intense for most movie-goers go enjoy, but I for sure see this movie being more of a satire than Borat was.
Some scenes made me blush, and some made me laugh out loud before the climax was even there. I really enjoyed the movie, while my brother who was sitting next to me hated it. It’s really up in the air. Not a good first date movie though, unless the girl is really cool, and you’re confident in your own penis.

  • Jordan Creany

I thought that this was the most despicable movie ever produced. I am a very honest law abiding citizen but i would have had no problem breaking into the theater and igniting the filmstrip. I will never go to another movie with the same cast, Not Sacha, the producer, director, anything. I strongly recommend not wasting your time and money on this film unless you enjoy subjecting yourself to the most crude humor you have ever faced. It is vulgar disgusting and offensive to politicians, african americans, jews, christians, caucasions, and the gay community. Never again!!!

  • Mandy

it was awful…. we left early and got our money back. Extremely offensive

  • waynewonder

Bruno was just plain stupid. I can’t believe there were actually people laughing hysterically in the theatre. I guess people are so disensitized to crap. I’m sorry I don’t find a fire extinguisher up a mans rectum funny. I’m 29 years old and I thought it wasn’t worth the 21.00 for the 2 tickets.

  • Priscilla

Absolutely hilarious! It’ll leave you both shocked and amused. A definite 10. Must see!

  • Seema

This movie was a complete waste of time. I hated Borat too, I always wondered why that movie did so well, I decided to give Bruno a chance and it was completely disgusting and a waste of 1 and a half hours of my life.

It was a sick and pathetic concept. Keep your child away from this movie. It is trash and totally immoral.

  • Bruno Watcher

As I watched the previews to Bruno I was already prepared for the disappointment of the main feature. The movie had a minimal story line. Its peak points exceeded my level of comfort and its low points were beyond boring. I would not encourage anyone to waste their money. I was one of the many sad viewers who were tricked by the previews. Go watch “The Hangover” if you want to laugh.

  • Manfred V. Richtofen

The movie was so funny there were tears rolling down my face…or maybe it was all the dangus…funnier than borat, but like i said…there was alot of man-parts which was a little too intense for me.

  • Chris

    Loved this Movie 5 stars!
    Funniest movie ever made!

  • laura

After the first 30 minutes, we left, not being the first ones to walk out, leaving 4 people in the theater. During those 30 minutes, no one laughed at all.

  • Haydee

Really, really, hated it. It was vulgar, crude, and offensive. I was told by some that it pushes the limits of our society and makes us think. What a load of crap!! There was nothing new or insightful that I didn’t already know. This was just completely tasteless humor. I don’t know how it was allowed in the theatre. Don’t watch this movie-what a waste.

  • De-rect

I just seen this movie with my brother and we both thought it was hilarious. So what it is offensive, that is the point! I could not stop laughing from beginning to end and I liked it more that Borat, and I love Borat! So if you find Cohens work funny and dont mind a little penis in your face, then you will love this move. Lighten up!

  • kentucky1976

it is amazing how may people say they left…really? what did they expect the movie to be like? it has been heavily marketed as full of nudity, and strong sexual content. props to sacha, we need more male nudity. come on folks get uber it. :)

  • Carie

Well, I am a pretty liberal 37 year old woman. My life is rather counter-culture, not mainstream at all. I spend most of my time selling jewelry at music festivals. I have no children.

That is so you know a little of where this comment comes from. I thought Borat was pretty funny, I thought Step Brothers was one of the funniest movies I ever saw. That is my taste in humor. (I know Step Brothers has nothing to do with Sacha, it’s just to show my taste).

Bruno, let’s see….At times, so out there that it hurt. Not really funny to me, I don’t care much for slapstick humor. I also don’t really think going and trying to get terrorists to kidnap you is funny. Nor messing around with Palestinians and Isralis that come the a table for a “peace talk” which turns out to be a sham. The girls in the “cause” PR firm were the best point made on stupidity. I don’t really think I learned anything new about homophobes, or the entertainment industry, or anything else. It kind of had a ring to it like Bill Maher’s Religulous, could have been done so much better and could have had much more poignancy. Add that to painful scenes of ridiculous sexual behavoir, painful scenes in which he flirts with danger for no apparent reason, and painful scenes of no apparent purpose whatsoever, and well, what more can I say? Sacha takes advantage of people trusting others, but that is only funny when they have a real reason to be “humbled”. I don’t feel that this movie did anything more for me than to push my boundaries way out of their comfort zone, and my night at the movies was spent uncomfortably for no apparent reason. I don’t feel like a more informed or enlightened person for watching this movie. I wouldn’t call it crap, or any other mean name, but I could not recommend is as a comedy. I have no hard feelings about the movie, I am actually sort of indifferent about it.

WROST MOVIE EVER!! this movie is a waste of time and money! why wound i wanna watch nude men!!!!!!!!

  • Pierce

The comments from most of the people on this page just shows how badly we need to have this kind of social commentary and the poignant observations of peoples reactions to real life situations. Cohen is an absolute genius and deserves extra credit for putting his life on the line for us – reminds me of another genius who wandered the earth about 2000 years ago…

Get your heads out of your collective asses – as that is where they are surely buried – and stop eating so much crap and living polluted lives to the point where you are not able to acknowledge that we need this – our society if it is to have any chance of survival needs this more than any war, more than any money/profit, more than fulfilling the dream – or should I say – the lie that is fame.
