The notion that Derek Jeter deserves the MVP is laughable. Joe Mauer leads him by wide margins in BA, HR, RBI, OBP and SLG, and is a much better defensive player than Jeter at an equally difficult position. BTW, the Twins, a much weaker team than the Yankees at the positions around Mauer so he has less support, are actually still in the mix in the AL Central (4.5 games out as of today) so he's not doing it on a bottom dwelling team either.

Jeter is a worthy candidate. He is one of the AL leaders in wins above replacement (WAR) on FanGraphs.com and the guys ahead of him like Joe Mauer and Ben Zobrist aren't really in consideration because their teams won't make the playoffs. If the Rays make a run I would probably vote for Zobrist and I'd consider Mauer no matter what. Jeter's only flaw is that he hasn't been a clutch hitter this year and is hitting lead-off so its hard to gauge how valuable he's been in terms of win-probability added.

But Jeter is a top-3 candidate. Caberara is a 1st basemen and 1st basemen with his numbers don't deserve MVPs. Justin Morneau didn't when he won.

Derek Jeter is definitely deserving of MVP, look at his numbers this year and pedroias numbers last year at the end they will be almost identical. Not to mention he is having one of his best if not the best defensive year of his career. The guy is a ballplayer he plays the game the way it should be played and the yankees would not be where they are right now without him. He is getting on base for guys like texiera and damon

I agree with the guy above me. Derek Jeter is well deserving of MVP and also Mark T doesnt even have a .300 BA and he has been off lately, and besides Homeruns and RBI's (which you get by hitting homeruns) Mark T is not worthy of the award either and no one else you mentioned is on the team with the best record

Well buddy Derek Jeter is the team leader in BA for the best team in the mlb maybe that's why he is considered mvp, or the fact that he is 35 and is having one of his best seasons ever. No one considered him MVP because he doesnt hit 30-40 homeruns a year, when in fact he's having a good power season. Joe mauer is probably not gonna win only because his team will not make the playoffs which makes the most sense considering that the most valuable player should be able to at least bring his team to the playoffs, and once again Derek Jeter is on the team with the best record.

Mauer will probably get it, but Cabrera deserves serious consideration. Without him, the Tigers are not even close to a playoff team. Jeter? He's having a fine season, but take him out of the Yankees' lineup, and N.Y. is still in first place. Teixeira? The guy's batting in the .280s, hardly MVP-worthy IMHO.
If Cabrera stays hot the rest of the season, and the Tigers finish in 1st, he could pull off an upset.
