She may not be that well known, but 26-year old rap artist Speech Debelle must be doing something right. After all, she has just surprised many and won the Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize, for the best British album of the year with “Speech Therapy,” at last night’s event.
And according to bloomberg.com, in doing so, she beat the more highly-tipped entries such as Kasabian and Florence and the Machine. “Speech Therapy” is Debelle’s debut album and was only released in June this year. “I feel so good” Debelle said after winning.
Many acts get a boost of interest after winning a Mercury Music Prize. And now, Speech Debelle can look forward to the same. Her album “Speech Therapy” has never reached the Official Singles or Albums charts, but I’m sure that is soon going to change.
