New American Idol 2009 Judge: Ellen DeGeneres

It appears that “American Idol” have found their new judge, to replace Paula who quit the show back in July. And according to reports from newsday.com, the new judge is to be talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. Yes that’s right, you read correctly.

In a recent statement that was released by the show, DeGeneres said that she was thrilled to be the new judge on “American Idol,” as she has watched it from the beginning and admits to being a huge fan of the reality show.

What do you think of Ellen being the new judge?

  • Calvin Davis

I can not believe you have chosen a this person withall the qualified people in American. American Idol has in the past been a family show. You have sure changed that….

  • nancy chapman

I think they could come up with someone else that has more knowledge in music the Ellen who only thinks she can dance!! Come on!!! She is a comedian. I may be boycotting the show! I hate it because I enjoy american idol every season

  • Leah Snell

I have watched American Idol since the beginning and I won’t anymore I can’t stand Ellen to look at her or to hear her voice. I would bet your viewership will go down, I personnally don’t know anyone that likes her.

  • Kate Wilson

I am very disappointed with this news. My family watched American Idol. We will no longer support this show.

  • Sherry Romano

I think Ellen will be great as a judge because she has a positive attitude that everyone can relate to. She is one of my favorite celebrities. I watch her daytime show everyday. She is very funny. Good Luck Ellen!!

  • Maile Felt

Are you kidding me?! I think Ellen will be great! No, she doesn’t have a formal knowledge of music, but she definitely knows her music!!! She is always uplifting and good spirited. The majority of the time Paula gave the contestants positive criticism, I think Ellen can and will do the same. I’m sure she will have many fans that will enjoy her presence on the show. There are some families that she does not entertain, but I still consider American Idol a show that MY family can enjoy watching together…especially with Ellen as a judge!

  • Judy Camedron

I am truly disappointed in your selection of host for American Idol. I don’t watch Ellen’s daytime show so I will be boycotting the American Idol show.

Let me know when you get a real musican on the show.

  • http://americanidol Doris

How unfortunate that American Idol has chosen Ellen to be a judge. That means that I will not be watching Idol anymore and I really enjoyed the program. What a shame that Paula is gone.

  • Joan

    Thumbs up Ellen

  • nkki

i can not believe they are letting her judge what does she know about music and with her on the pannel it jus takes away from the family environment i am seriously disgusted now she is seriously going to ruin it jus like how kira did uggg

  • janice

I am sorry to hear that Paula has left & especially disappointed in the choice of a new judge. I don’t find ED funny. I did not care for her input last season on SYTYCD, her ‘stick’ was repetitious, unprofessional & annoying. If she wants to have a talk show & people wish to tune in, good for her but for millions of Americans who wish to make AI part of their weekly viewing, adding ED is a huge mistake, in my opinion. I thought the show was about finding new talent & giving people through out America a chance for stardom. I don’t know what ‘elements of thought’ went into your decision to add her, but I for four, (speaking for entire family), am not sure if we’ll watch this season. What a shame!

  • Jane Robo

America certainly was not built on gays and lesbians and I can’t believe that you have chosen her to replace a judge…American Idol means something to us and what it stands for and I dont’ think it is that way of living…It is wrong and the BIBLE says it…As far as my family is concerned..ya’ll have so messed up!! I have always been a fan, but am second guessing it all now…For what its worth, you need to reconsider your choice…I feel better now!!

  • Rick Smith

I’ll try using DVR to bypass the new judge and if that doesn’t work, good bye American Idol.

  • Deborah

I will not be watching Idol again. I thought this was a family show and clearly it isn’t. Too bad. It’s the only show I watched other than news. I think this is a big mistake for FOX. There are so many other people that would have brought so much to the show. Bad choice… and I wonder why FOX would want to shove this sort of thing down our throats and influence our young children this way.

  • Linda Harrison

You have got to be kidding! Ellen DeGeneres does not have any credentials whatsoever to be an Idols judge…as a long-time viewer, skeptical at first to even watch the “show that everyone was talking about”, this may be it for me. American Idol is losing it’s focus and abrogating its base. I have seen this time and time again–it is almost predictable when a show starts to make poor decisions like this one, it is the beginning of its demise.

  • Marica Lee

I can’t believe you chose DeGeneres. Who came up with that lame idea. I have never considered her funny – only ackward. Don;t like her show or commercials. Please come up with someone better. This is one of my favorite shows each year, but I won’t be watching this year.

  • Don Rhem

I never have missed a show in the past but will miss all of them in the future. A terrible choice!

  • Rose M. Angelo

I love Ellen but I do not feel that she has the music background/experience to be a judge. I like to see judges who have the musicality that would be beneficial to both the show and to the contestants. I’m a fan of the show but if Ellen is there as a judge I don’t think I will bother watching. PLEASE reconsider your choice and put someone in there that knows what their talking about.

  • Marre

the choice of ellen as a judge belittles the entire judging process. she says she knows what the public wants to hear, but that’s what producers (who make the music, and put up their $$, ie, randy and simon) already know. yes, paula was a bit wingy at times but she had a proven music/dancing background. ellen’s comments will lend comedy to the serious business of discovering, mentoring and encouraging real singers – if i want a laugh, i’ll watch another show and now i’ll have to find out what’s showing in idol’s timeslot — poor choice

  • meshu

Well i won’t be watching it anymore. I will be going back to watching cimminal minds. As for Idol’s choice for a new Judge ANYONE would have been better then Ellen. I can’t stand looking at her … hell she’s not even funny when she tries to be.

  • Anony Mouse

After losing Paula A., I didn’t think I would watch. Now I am certain that I won’t. The show has officially become a joke now. Ellen is talented in her own right, but doesn’t seem like the best, or even a good, choice for a judge. Come on! Is she the best judge they could find?

  • Larry Tucker

Well, I’ve been a viewer since the Program started and have really enjoyed it even though I’m 73 years young. However, your selection of replacement judge leaves me totally cold. I just can’t handle Ellen.
    Goodbye.

  • mary pergerson

    9-10-09
Every year we look forward to our “weeks with American Idol” and the talent and the judges. This selection has shocked our family and our friends. This is not the person for Idol or families. We will NOT be entertained by the show any longer because of your poor, poor selection. Your integrity level dropped. This is a family show scheduled at family time. We will cut the TV off. Let us know if you remove Ellen DeGeneres from the judge panel and we will rejoin your audience. Our friends have said they too will choose not to watch. We will miss you Randy, Kara, Simon.

  • Leona Stroble

Will not watch while Ellen is on!Always has to be a gay in every show,I’ve quit watching while they are on,just because it seems to be legal now,I don’t condon that behavior and will not have it shoved down my throat!

  • Dori

    I don’t get it. Ellen!!!!!!!!!
Want does she know about singing. The idols need constructive comments on how to…
What credentials does she have that an idol can use to better oneself. Comedic credentials isn’t what a singing show needs.
What about a singer as a judge for a stand-up comic show. It doesn’t make
sense!!!!. I’m sure there were hundreds of funny yet musically inclined people to choose from. I thought this was a serious show with people’s career at stake. Where will she help but to add comedy only to it. That’s ok for viewers but not the contestants.
    REALLY wrong choice!!!!

  • Ed

First- As a Gay male, I have never felt Ellen was funny, but that\’s her \”style\” of humor. I too do not care for her voice as some others have said, nor do I watch her shows and can change the chanel when her American Express commercials aired. But Second-To the few who said AIdol is a family show, and her being there will remove that aspect-Get a life-Gay prople are family oriented just as anyone else is who wants to settle down and be happy with someone for the rest of their life. In fact I am going to a male-male church wedding on the 20th. I have been w my lover, signif other for 33 years, we have had dogs, cats so don\’t tell me all Gays are not family oriented. Where is it family oriented to dis-own your teen because the admit to being different. Anyway back to AIdol, I agree, that I too may not watch with the same attitude, but will see a few episodes to see how she does. True, Ellen cannot carry a tune, and does not know music. I always enjoyed Paula as you did not know what she was gonna say or do next, and her interaction w Simon was always enjoyable to watch. At least Ellen won\’t be sleeping with the male contestants, if that was true as rumored about Paula, but then, now who knows, maybe the Family Oriented producers chose E, to give the female contestants a little fringe benefit. lol(How did you ever get the idea it was a family show anyway?)

  • Paris

I was so disappointed to hear that Paula Abdul was leaving the show; however, my fiance and I are very disappointed with the selection of Ellen. What’s the big deal about Ellen and what qualifies her to be a judge on American Idol? Ellen does not even come close to representing Americans. I will probably never watch American Idol again because I’ll have a difficult time watching and listening to this new judge.

  • Mimi Pruitt

    Simon,
You must not be a carpenter because you sure did not nail it with your choice of Ellen. She was so repetitive and boring and down right smarmy with her “nailed it” comments. My family and I are sorry to say we will choose not to watch American Idol this season until you have selected someone who can knowledgeably judge and articulate clearly without being sickenly “pollyanna-ish”

Surely, you could have chosen a more competent judge. How about saving Ellen for “So You think You are Funny”?

  • Mimi

Did I mention that she can’t dance either?

  • EllenRocks

    U go girl!!

And all of u who dont like her must really get over the whole ‘omw i cant stand lesbians or gays’. Wake up people, maybe it’s even your own daughter or son ;)

We sure out 2 get em all Haha

    ;)

  • Gene Dudley

You have chosen someone as a judge who does not represent American values. You are judges of musical talent and I ask you how can she judge someone when she couldn’t begin to compete herself? We will not participate in watching what is becoming a fading show. I hope this is the last season.

  • http://Yahoo Swifty

I heard about this 2 days ago and I thought I heard this wrong, then I read it for myself,I’ll have to find something esle to do on Tuesday nights I will NOT be watching American Idol, all credibility is gone,,, I cannot believeyou people, what are you thinking, come on tell us something so maybe we can understand, I still won’t watch the show with her on it, she has no bussiness being on the show period. I thought I would feel better after voicing my view,,,,,,,,,I don’t it didn’t help. the only fix is to find a different Judge.

  • http://typrince ty

I AM SAD PAULA IS GONE AND YES I DO LIKE ELLEN BUT NOT FOR A JUDGE ON THE IDOL WHAT ARE THE PRODUCERS THINKING MAYBE THEY SHOULD REPLACE THE PRODUCERS FOR THE IDOL CAUSE THEY LACK IN THE RIGHT CHOICES FOR PEOPLE TO JUDGE A DANCE AND SING CONTEST. COME ON PEOPLE GET IT TOGETHER

  • Seriously

Seriously?? I can understand the argument that Ellen has little to no experience w/music, or that there are many more qualified people out there who have put their time in, in the industry. That I understand.
Values, bible, family…yeah, Gay and Lesbian people have value(s), religion, and yes..families, so the used up, old , easy argument that you \”Christians\” seem to throw around is so limited and disgusting. It shows very little creativity or actual thought that it is laughable. Get over yourself, grow up!!

  • Dan

Ellen is a phony and a fake. I hope Simon chews her up and spits her out. I can’t stand Ellen and will not watch American Idol again until she is gone!

  • Patty

I have been a faithful follower of American Idol. With this choice, I will NOT be watching the show this season. She is not qualified nor does she represent what Idol has worked so hard for.

  • Christina M

Ok. First of all.. the judges on the show are there for looks and for entertainment. They are basically playing a role. Yes, they have musical talent, but they don’t need to be extremely talented to sit up there and say “I wasn’t feelin’ it” or “That wasn’t your best.”

SO I think Ellen would be a great addition to the show because she will be humorous and will probably change the vibe of the show a little bit, which wouldn’t be a terrible thing since American Idol has basically been exactly the same for the last 10 or so years.

For the people who will not watch the show just because a gay comedian is going to be a judge and will in turn make the show “less family oriented”, you people are obviously not fans of music because thats what the show is really about, the music and the performers. So if thats not why you watch it, then you probably SHOULD stop watching.

  • Melissa

Wow, I can’t believe all the homophobes out there! I think Ellen will be refreshing, funny and positive. I think she will be a great addition to the show.

  • V Scott

I watched American Idol because of the chemistry and heart that Paula brought to the show. This is something they can’t replace. She deserves a lot of respect and thanks for her work. I also love the real person that Ellen is and will give her and the show another chance.

  • http://NewAmericanIdol2009 DOWHAT

I have watched American Idol every time it comes on. It is one of my favorite shows. I really like Paula and enjoyed her. I hated to see her leave the show. I could not believe it when I heard that Ellen was taking Paula’s place as a judge for American Idol. I said, “You’ve got to be kidding.” I wish it was a joke!! I beg you to reconsider your choice. My grandchildren like this show, but will not be allowed to watch it any more. Ellen is not funny. She is a bad influence for children. If we wanted to laugh we could fine a good comedian on another show. I must say that any one would have been a better choice. Your integrity level has dropped. You can be sure that our family will not be watching, and all of my friends say they are not going to watch either. We will miss you Randy, Kara, and Simon.

  • http://AmericanIdol Randy Turner

I have been a loyal viewer of American Idol, since the opening show. I voted for my favorites every week. I can honestly say that with the addition of Ellen DEGENERANT, I will no longer even watch a commercial with the new shows. BIG MISTAKE, she will cost you millions of viewers.

  • http://google shortcake

VERY DISAPPOINTING! PLEASE RECONSIDER THIS JUDGE…

  • fern

i must say i was disappointed in the selection of ellen to replace paula; while i enjoy ellen on her show (comedy is her shtick) she was rather annoying on sytycd (basically she was a time filler); the judges have always had some background in music and therefore were qualified to judge others abilities; ellen is a comedian! who is she to judge? i’ll watch and see what happens, but i can’t guarantee i’ll see it through to the end of the season

  • http://att.net Jeannine

I am very happy with the choice of Ellen to take Paula’s place. Just because paula use to be a singer doesn’t mean she was a good judge. People who are choosing not to watch Idol because of Ellen’s the new judge don’t know what at great show they are going to be missing now. Boycott what you want ….. who needs them. LOVE ELLEN and the show.

  • Steve

ELLEN!? What a horrible choice! Thats like hiring a mechanic to do your triple by-pass surgery, no offense to either profession my point is it doesn’t make sense. The contestants and chemistry of the judges is what made the show. By removing Paula you’ve lost that. I WILL NOT be watching anymore without Paula.

  • Kay

I LOVE Ellen and can’t wait to watch her on Idol! She’s smart, articulate, and FUNNY! She’s a REAL person, sensitive, and devoted to all that she does!

  • Sara

I WILL NO LONGER WATCH AMERICAN IDOL! I have also watched it before and I am very disappointed by this lousy choice !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Judy

I am so dissapointed with your choice of Ellen for the new American Idol judge, I love Ellen as a comedian, but as a singing judge you have to be kidding….I think of American Idol as an realistic judging of the next great and upcomming singing talent in America. I see nothing funny about that, sure there are many laughs and fun times on the show, but it is not a comedy. I really do not know what the show will be like without Paula or someone as accomplished as Paula as a singer, or someone who has a serious perspective on singing….Ellen wasnt even taken serious on So You Think You Can Dance, it was funny but like a waste of time.
Please reconsider, your shows viewing numbers believe me are going to fall, after the newness wears off. Please keep the show a true search for Americas next American Idol, not a comedy.

  • gree

My mind is definitely made up now. I WILL NOT ever watch the American Idol show as long as Ellen, the new judge is on there.
Hard to believe with so many choices to select from, some idiot picks someone who has no knowledge of singing talent.
The show was perfect just the way it was in the beginning, with the three judges. It has not been right since the 4th judge came on. What idiot decided that the show needed an extra judge??? Whomever it was they should be fired.

Also, Paula should have never been let go. They should have paid her more that what she was making. She was the heart of the Idol.
I looked forward to seeing what outfit she had on each week. Well, I know what to look for with Ellen. Mans pants and shirt and shoes.

I predict that this will be the last season for the American Idol, as I know that millions of Christian people will not be watching with the new judge being who and what she is.

I know I will not even turn it on. As far as I am concerned the show does not exist.

And, that makes me sad, as it WAS one of my favorite shows on television.

    A very disappointed fan,

    gree

  • Dan

Ho my God, I can’t beleive it. First, Gree, You should of stop watching the show a long time ago. What are you doing with all the gay contestants in the show. Because their is some every year in the final 10 or 20. We are almost in 2010, and I can’t beleive how poeople are still so retarded. Get a life. I wish you all that one day your kid will open up and tell you they are gay. I am not a big fan of Ellen, but I like her, and I am ready to give her a chance before judging her like you almost all did here. I thought Christian were not suppose to judge!!! I just don’t understand why you all said this was a familly show. What is the best for your familly? Having a lesbian on the show or a drunk half past out who can’t follow what is going on on the stage?? well…..good luck Ellen, I will watch the show, because I have an open mind and I can deal with changes in my live, a lot of you can’t.

  • Connie

Gay, Staight, Black, White, Green, or Yellow…What does it matter???? I think the combination of Randy, Simon & Ellen will be fantastic!!!! Ellen has a dry sense of humor which will definitely compliment the other 2 judges.

  • Travis

American idol, i think you have made a TERRIBLE choice. As a bible-believing christian, i cannot accept ellen’s lifestyle. maybe you are unaware of the 88% of america that believe in God. God clearly says that her lifestyle is sin. So i will not watch your show. I wont be surprised if this is your last season. Get someone else. The bible commands me to love all people, but not to accept their sin. I love the person, hate the lifestyle.

do not represent america with this. what do you think our founding fathers would think. they would be angry. you are shoving an inappropriate lifestyle down the throats of millions of people. WHAT HAPPENED TO FAMILY VALUES.

    goodbye american idol
