Roger Federer Outburst: US Open Mens Final 2009

Well one thing is certain; the US Open 2009 will be remembered for player’s outbursts. We mentioned about Serena William’s outburst a few days ago, now it seems that Roger Federer wants to have his say with the umpire during the US Open Mens Final 2009.

The video of the outburst, which you can see here, is not as heated as the Serena one, but it still shows that Federer has a little wild side to him, as he does not agree with the umpire’s decision. The Huffington Post explains the reason why Roger was upset was the fact that the umpire allowed Juan Martin Del Potro to challenge a shot after a long period.

Roger Federer Outburst: US Open Mens Final 2009

The defending US Open Men’s Champion was telling the umpire that it is wrong that Del Potro was allowed to challenge a line call so long after it had happened. In Federer’s outburst, he said, “I wasn’t allowed to challenge after two seconds. The guy takes like 10 every time.” The umpire did not take too kindly to this and asked Federer to be quiet, but the Federer who went on to lose the match said, “You have any rules? Don’t tell me to be quiet, ok.”

OK..Every game should be fair and square. Roger was absolutely right.

This guy did eactly what that beanpole did to Roddick, slowed down the pace to his advantage. There is a 30 second rule for a reason and they both should have been eliminated… Hope all the linesmen/women, ref’s and everyone else won their illeagle bets…

This Del Porto did just the same thing that beanpole did against Roddick. There is a 20 second rule for a reason and they both cheated. They paced the game to their liking and cheated… You are # 1 Roger, dont worry, we know the truth, same for you Andy…

I think Federer has won so many slams that he think no one can beat him. He needs to get off the high horse.

Federer usually can control his emotion. I just don’t understand about this year US Open finals.

I was left with such a feeling of disgust after that match, that I couldn’t bear to watch the trophy ceremony. What’s the point honestly, Federer is too gracious sometimes to tell it like it is, ofcourse he’s going to go up there and thank the sponsors and congratulate del potro blah blah blah, but aside from that “outburst” if you can even call it one, the ATP is once again left unchallenged for its corrupt almost totalitarian way of officiating events. In this match it became apparent that the ATP’s goal was to not allow Federer to win. It started off with Del Potro having the nerve to say he wasn’t ready for one of Federer’s serves, which coincidentally was an ace, while after watching multiple replays was a load of bull as Del Potro was fully ready to return and only put up his hand long after the point had been over. Long story short, he mumbles he wasn’t ready and the umpire without and sort of judgment call replays the point. Even though Federer ends up winning the game, this undoubtedly would stay in the back of anyone’s mind as to how fair this match will really be officiated. It didn’t end there, as mentioned by Scooter, the issue with the challenge, once again adds some more doubt accompanied by anger inside Federer’s head. And adding further to that, when federer wanted to challenge later in the match because he really had no other choice, since the umpire played dumb and chose to ignore a fan yelling out after del potro’s serve, Del Potro starts throwing a tantrum and the umpire almost actually considers not allowing federer to challenge! Couple all these events together with the added fact that almost every service point del potro surpasses the time limit, and not marginally either, and its not hard to see why Federer’s game dropped so significantly throughout the match. In his position, I would screw the ATP and retire, then they can be left with all their one dimensional players and once again have their ratings drop to what they used to be. It just seems like the more Federer wins, the less he is appreciated and the more it is hoped for that he loses, instead of being grateful that an athlete so talented and likable has put on magnificent shows throughout this decade that we would be hard pressed to ever witness again.

I loved his reaction! It was the best part of the match….

So, according gcaz, scooter perry, and MAUNG, federer’s disrespect and complete disregard to officials is completely normal and justified. Addressing an opinion and a hostile tantrum are two completely different things. He was the defending champion and should behave in an orderly manner towards officials. The umpire had every reason to instruct federer of his childish outburst. In the end, underdog del potro beat him.

    you are the best roger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was a discouraging US Open this year. The chair umps didn’t even try to control the obnoxious New York crowds and this led to someone of Federer’s stature to have to put up with fans calling “out”, having an ace overruled (!!!), etc. The umps are running scared of the crowds and they’re turning the US Open into a joke. All bread and circuses…

  • gcaz

Well to pat cil, when you are competing in a sport governed by rules, it is more than acceptable to show disrespect to an official that either is willingly not enforcing the rules, or is too stupid to even realize that a rule is being broken. Furthermore, it is even more acceptable to be angry when, not only is the umpire allowing your opponent to break a rule without any observation or warning, but then in the same circumstances when you wish to act in a similar manner, he hesitates to grant you the same privilege.

It would have been fine for del potro to object had he been rejected a chance to challenge, but since he was allowed to challenge AFTER having taken the time to consult his box, he should have shut up and and let federer request a challenge.

Congratulations to Juan Martin, he is a great player.

I saw the match live, from start to finish and the best player won on the night. The people using the Federer outburst as an excuse to why he lost or saying the match was fixed, these people are clearly biased, dilusional Federer fans that can’t accept the fact that he can ever lose a match fair and square. The truth hurts and the truth is that Federer was just second best on the night. Juan Martin Del Potro more than deserved to win the match.

Also, personally, i think it’s healthy for tennis as a whole that there are more players like Del Potro that can take it to Federer in the Grand Slams and beat him, uo until now it’s only been Nadal that can beat Federer in Grand Slams, now it’s someone else…..and there will be more players like Nadal and Del Potro appearing who, like those 2 players, will NOT be bullied or intimidated by Federer or his ‘imposing nature’ that he uses tactically to make his opponents feel uncomfortable or intimidated. Again, personally, i’m sick of seeing him use those ‘tactics’ on his opponents in the Grand Slams and i’m GLAD, for that reason, that Del Potro won…..and he deserved it. Simple as that Federer fans! Deal with it!!

P.S – I’m not a ‘Nadal fan’ or a ‘Del Potro fan’, i’m a ‘Tennis fan’ and Del Potro winning the US Open Grand Slam was great for Tennis in general, had enough of the same player getting to the Grand Slam finals using his ‘tactics’ i mentioned before to intimidate his way to the Grand Slam victories (as seen against Soderling in the French Open final, Soderling had lost that battle mentally long before the match had started!). I await more ‘Nadal’s’ and more ‘Del Potro’s’ coming to bring Federer back down to earth and finally retire him once and for all! That’s why Federer does not like to play Nadal or Murray, as they will NOT give in to his ‘tactics’ and have game plans to beat him and stick to them and more often than not, beat him! As i’ve already said, I’TS GREAT FOR TENNIS!!!!!

Congratlations Del Potro, you more than deserved your US Open 2009 Grand Slam title, well done!!!!!!!!!!
