Little Dorrit Gets 7 Awards: 61st Primetime Emmy Awards

Not many of you would have thought that a BBC drama such as “Little Dorrit,” would outshine many US shows, to win Emmy Awards. But according to reports from guardian.co.uk, that is exactly what the Dickens adaption did.

At last night’s star-studded 2009 Primetime Emmy Awards, which took place at the Nokia Theater, “Little Dorrit” flew past many of the other shows, to pick up seven Emmys, including the awards for writing and cinematography.

This mini-series, which ran on PBS, was top rate! It was excellent in every aspect, from the actors and script, to the staging. I am happy that it won so many Emmys but cannot understand why the actors themselves were overlooked. Matthew Macfadyen is an extraordinary British actor, who has demonstrated his versatility in several diverse productions on screen, as well as on the stage. He has earned the right to be regarded as a seasoned professional, yet he seems to be ignored in the U.S. He should not be unfamiliar to this side of the Atlantic. His role of Mr. Darcy in the 2003 hit Pride and Prejudice was an amazingly sensitive and nuanced interpretation. Another movie, Death at a Funeral, played here, although in more artsy venues. Now he has added Little Dorrit to his repertoire. Macfadyen has appeared in several other films that have not been widely seen in this country. Nevertheless, based on his work in Little Dorrit, he deserves recognition, as does Claire Foy, a relative newcomer to film. The good news is that both actors have roles in upcoming productions. Macfadyen should be kept busy at least for the next 2-3 years. He has said he is not seeking fame or silver screen status, for he enjoys acting on the stage. Will he have time in the future for play acting? Demand for him in movies is definitely increasing, which is a propitious sign. He certainly has aesthetics on his side; tall, handsome, with turquoise eyes and a deeply sonorous, sexy voice, he is a true dreamboat. With that added to singular talent, it seems likely to me that Macfadyen will eventually get wider recognition and appreciation on this side of the Atlantic. He deserves it.
