Uwem Akpan Chosen By Oprah: Feels Humbled

Jesuit priest and Nigerian author Uwem Akpan, has spoken out recently, saying that he feels humbled, that US talk show host Oprah Winfrey chose his book “Say You’re One of Them,” for the focus of her book club.

According to reports from reuters.com, Oprah chose Akpan’s book as the 63rd book club selection, because she said the stories left her stunned and profoundly moved. The collection of short stories, were published in 2008.

The book is said to include five separate stories, through the eyes of an African child, which captured the resilience of children growing up with unimaginable devastation. Uwem said that he was very, very humbled to be chosen.

He also said that he is not currently working on any books, as his parish has been very busy, although he did say that the church supports his writing. Oprah’s book club is the biggest in the world, with nearly 2 million online members.
