Gap Founder Dies: Don Fisher was 81

Don Fisher died in his home in San Francisco on Sunday at the age of 81, following a long battle with cancer. The entrepreneur opened the first Gap store with his wife Doris in San Francisco in 1969.

The Gap label was introduced in 1972, which became the first retail chain, to use its store name as the brand name. It was just last month that Gap celebrated its 40th anniversary by selling a new line of jeans called 1969 Premium Jeans.

Mr Fisher left a career in real estate development to start Gap, because he had a frustrating time trying to exchange a pair of jeans that didn’t fit. In 2004 he stepped down as chairman, continuing as a director and chairman emeritus.

Mr Fisher had three sons and 10 grandchildren, Bob Fisher one of his sons has worked at Gap for 30 years. Fisher senior told managers earlier this year, “I look at running a store and running a business as playing a game, and what do you do when you want to play a game? You want to win.” Well Mr Fisher you are a winner in my eyes. For more on this story go to telegraph.co.uk.
