Mohandas Karamchand (Mahatma) Gandhi would have celebrated his birthday today, he was born on October 2 1869 and died on 30 January 1948, he died aged 79. Gandhi was known as the eminent political and spiritual leader for India and its movement towards independence.
Gandhi was the pioneer of satyagraha, this was the resistance to tyranny through mass civil disobedience. The spiritual leader was all for non-violence, which he tried to pass on to others. This eventually led to India’s independence.
There are many people who do not know Gandhi as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, most know him as Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma means ‘Great Soul’, which was bestowed to him by Rabindranath Tagore. October 2 is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday. The day is also seen as an International Day of Non-Violence, not sure if that will happen in this day and age.
