Sharp and TDK have recently announced that they will be releasing a 100GB and 320GB discs respectively. There will be applications for the larger recordable discs but it seems this will be limited to BD-R/RE for storage of data rather than film playback.
The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) was asked to comment on the possibility of Blu-ray movie titles utilizing the new technology 100GB and 320GB discs. Andy Parsons, Chair of the Blu-ray Disc Association Promotion Committee, in the United States said this is unlikely to happen any time soon.
At the moment “50GB two layer discs” will only be used because manufactures have designed players to current specifications published, which have defined the media capacity to 50GB on two layers.
Head over to blu-ray.com for more details, would you have a use for the larger capacity discs? How would you like them to be used?
