South Park, love it or hate it, you have to give Parker & Stone some credit for coming up with some great anecdotes over the years, and they have done it again, this time incorporating ‘The F Word’.
No, it’s not the word that is the most commonly used swear word in the English language, the word that can either be a verb, adverb, noun, interjection, or a conjunction. Fu— yeah that one.
The word we are looking for is commonly labelled with homosexuals. You got it yet? Do I have to say it? Ok, let me get some South Park courage… Fag, or it’s full name, Faggot.
Let us remind ourselves of the current meaning via the dictionary…
fag-got 2 (fag’at)
n. Offensive Slang
Used as a disparaging term for a homosexual man.
Over the course of time South Park has been running, they sure have ran straight into some controversy, but the story always ends up with everyone being happy. If anything it highlights everyone’s social circle that the word lives in today.
The Episode, which covers the word ‘fag’, stars a bunch of motorcyclists on Harley’s that ride into town and cause mayhem. As a result, the South Park boys get angry and start spray painting the words “fags get out” around the town. The town erupts, with the boys explaining to the politically correct resident’s that fag no longer just means ‘gay,’ but has also been used many a time in the past, from old person to homosexual. When they finally convince them to change its meaning to “an inconsiderate douche bag,” the town resumes back to normal again.
And I think it is quite politically correct, shoot me down if you want to. But in this day and age, especially a politically correct one, the word ‘fag’ is not pointed at a particular group of people, but rather just a derogatory word used for all types of “inconsiderate douche bags.”
I want you thoughts about the word? Do you find it offensive? How do you portray it?

I thought the episode was great! First, obnoxious Harley riders are fags, and second, they’re correct in saying the word fag doesn’t have a homosexual connotation for many younger people. It really isn’t meant as a slur toward gays and lesbians most of the time. The definition they show at the end of the episode is the perfect new meaning of the word.
I thought this episode was pretty funny and raised some intelligent discussions about contemporary uses of the word ‘fag’ in today’s society. However, I thought the ending of this week’s episode was quite lame and seemed like the writers were just trying to plant seeds of anger against a particular sub-culture group rather than provide a sense of closure to the topic’s cultural references. Whilst Harley riders may well be disrespectful of other people’s ’space’, surely ignoring them is the best way to piss them off?… Afterall, people like them thrive on getting the attention of others — Ironically, this notion is even highlighted by Cartman in the episode! Overall, not bad, but seen much better ones than this. Still, I would like to hear other people’s thoughts!
Matt, U.K.
The show also uses the word ‘gay’ as a slur. I wonder if they are going to pull out it’s entomology in their defense?
