Sesame Street 40th Anniversary: Author returns for celebration

Sesame Street turns 40 Tuesday, making it the longest-running children’s show in history. Anna Jane Hays returned to the show on Saturday.

Hayes became an author and publisher of Sesame Street Magazine and Sesame Street Books in 1970. On her return to Carlsbad on Saturday, she read some of her books to children. Anna said” It’s quite a challenge to make the pages come to life, like the television show. “It is not very far from Canyon Street or from Church Street to Sesame Street,” she told the children.

The show has influenced generations of Americans and has been adapted culturally and linguistically for broadcast in 140 different countries. Hays took her Sesame Street books to international book fairs.
