Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who is classed as one of basketball’s all-time greatest players, made an announcement on Tuesday morning, that he has cancer. The NBA legend was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia, nearly a year ago.
The 62-year old sports star said that as he lost one of his closest friends to a different and highly aggressive form of leukemia, he knew exactly how serious his diagnosis was. He went on to say that his own life expectancy became a question mark.

Abdul-Jabbar, who is currently a coach for the Los Angeles Lakers, was diagnosed with CML in December 2008 and is now being treated for the disease. With the treatment that he is receiving, Kareem is expected to live a full and active life.
Kareem, who is normally an intensely private person, said that the reason he came forward with his illness, was because he learned that many patients don’t take their medication regularly and tend to miss appointments with their doctors.
