This Thursday is Thanksgiving Day in the US and that is the exact day, when the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade takes place in New York City. The Thanksgiving Day parade is a three-hour event, which begins at 9:00 AM EST.
Macy’s parade first began in the 1920’s, when a lot of the employees at Macy’s were first-generation immigrants. They wanted to celebrate the U.S. holiday of Thanksgiving, with a type of festival that their parents in Europe had loved.

The very first parade was in 1924, and was originally known as the Macy’s Christmas parade. Employees of the Macy’s store and professional entertainers marched from 145th Street in Harlem, to Macy’s flagship store on 34th Street.
That very first parade attracted an audience of over a quarter of a million people. As it was such a huge success, Macy’s decided to declare it an annual event. Large animal-shaped balloons replaced the live animals in the parade in 1927.
