To win a Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award, would be a very special accomplishment for any major league baseball player. But if you are in the position of catcher like Minnesota Twins Joe Mauer, then the distinction is definitely a rare one.
And according to reports from mlb.com, when Joe Mauer was selected as the winner of the American League MVP Award yesterday, he became only the second catcher in the past 33 years, to have taken home the MVP Award.

When speaking about the MVP award, Mauer said that he didn’t actually realize the rarity of his feat, until he received the phone call from Jack O’Connell of the Baseball Writers’ Association, which was to let him know about his award win.
