FIFA World Cup 2010: Should Michael Owen go?

Did you see the Champions League match between Manchester United and Wolfsberg last night? If you missed it, you missed Michael Owen seemingly back to his goal-scoring best, as he completed a stunning hat trick – his first for his new club.

The question everyone is asking now though, is should Michael Owen be heading to the World Cup next year in South Africa?

FIFA World Cup 2010: Should Michael Owen go?

It’s no secret that manager Fabio Capello has opted to keep Michael Owen out of the majority of his squads, insisting that its not personal between the two, but the fact that he only picks players on current form.

Well judging by his hat trick last night, especially his third goal (reminiscent of France 98′), perhaps Michael Owen should be on the plane to South Africa, not only for current form, but experience and his ‘still’ great goal-scoring record for his country.

What are your thoughts on this debate? Should Michael Owen go to the World Cup as third choice behind Wayne Rooney and Jermain Defoe? Leave your comments below.

England… Take Michael Owen to the world cup?

2 words to sum up Michael Owen… PAST IT!

He has been about as much use as a chocolate fire guard for united, just because he scores a hatrick in a game that didnt really matter to Man U doesnt automatically put him on the plane to south africa!

I would sooner put Darren (crap) Bent on the pitch ahead of Owen… i tell you wot… BRING BACK SHEARER… now theres a striker!

England should take (deffinates) Rooney, Defoe, Cole and then 2 other players that are in form at the time

Its a hard decision this year to be honest, I would sooner take 2 goalkeepers and an extra striker.

Obviously Rooney and Defoe are definite choices, and in my opinion Crouch should join that list, however then you are left with Carlton Cole, Emile Heskey, Michael Owen and Gabriel Agbonlahor and a few other names that are not really worth a mention…

I think Michael Owen has what it takes to win a game for England whereas the others are questionable.

Michael Owen has proven with the right service he can score all types of goal, yesterday he scored a header a tap in and a one on one (after a 40 yard dash). Obviously he struggled at Newcastle but lets face it the squad surrounding him didn’t exactly help matters, nor did his lack of fitness.

By the way I am an Emile Heskey fan as he does a lot in a game that goes un-noticed, however I feel Crouch can play that role and add another dimension.

would you really want to take 2 goal keepers?! England are struggling with 1 decent keeper..?!

  • Jamie Pert

if we are struggling to find 1 decent goalkeeper whats the point of taking 3 dodgy ones

poor michael owen, he's one of the best british players ever but had so bad luck in these world cups, I hope he'll be playing for england again this year, at least give him his last world cup.

greetings from an argentine guy who enjoys british football.

by the way: I wish we could have a player like him instead of the sh** we have for a national squad, almost all bad players, really bad coach for sure… damn it.
