I think in terms of longevity for the programme itself it was a move in the right direction. Season 5 will now kick off with a bang and have a totally different start than all the other seasons. I can just imagine how Dexter will have to juggle, looking after the children, being a suspect for his wife's murder and the most obvious one, satisfying his "dark passenger."
