With all the hype surrounding one of the hottest Christmas battles we have seen for many a Christmas year, Rage Against The Machine, who are going head-to-head with X Factor winner Joe McElderry performed live on BBC Radio’s ‘Five Live,’ and then was thrown off for swearing.
The live performance which aired live during the breakfast show, had to be faded out when they continued to swear at least four times before they were cut short, with an immediate sorry from the BBC hosts.
A BBC Spokesperson said that they had spoken to the band beforehand, and told them repeatedly not to swear, to which they agreed. Obviously the band ignored the request and went on to swear anyway, which could have gone either one of two ways, the public either loved the rebellious side, or just thought of it as plain rude.
What do you think? Are you ‘Team Joe’ or ‘Team RATM’?

So they agreed not to swear and changed their mind afterward? They also agreed to give the money to the charity, will they also change their mind? Now, I have serious doubt…
Shut up, the song is about completely ignoring what people tell you to do. “I WONT DO WHAT YOU TELL ME”! – point of the song you goon
Oh get over it Sandra, this is the most publicity RATM have had in years. They did it, to make a statement, they never changed their minds, they just lied to the producers. Tom Morello has worked endlessly to put thousands of dollars of proceeds into the homeless charities, his most famous guitar has the slogan ‘arm the homeless’ written on it. Zach De La Rocha does a load of charity work anyway, and so no, they will not “change their mind” about giving the money to charity.
Yeah, because anarchy is such a good idea, lets all destroy things and steal and generally mess up everything our democracy has worked for.
They’re so arrogant and I hope Joe gets to #1, he’s a lot nicer than these elitist ‘my music is better quality than your music’ idiots
Exactly bob, Sandra stop being a mong, they did that as a stand against public censorship etc etc etc blah blah blah…
Rage ftw, number 1 for sure…
just by looking at the title of the song ‘I WONT DO WHAT YOU TELL ME’, why should I buy it buy because you want me to make it to the #1 xmas song. I like good music, and will buy it if it is a good song and good singer. RATM is just another trash music.
the whole point of this campaign to stop x-factor domination of the carts is as Ijust said, to stop x-factor domination – - if ya look for x-factor -its “The X Factor is a British television singing competition contested by aspiring singers drawn from public auditions”
In realaty it ends the TV series just close to christmas, and after fleecing the UK household for a vote at the end of each episode on who will go through, a winner is revealed, ufortunately, it’s manufacturing numbrt ones, and over christmas, I personally like Rage against the machine – as I do linkin park, effervecense etx, I dont dislike pop, BUT I DO dislike manufatured pop – at the helm is Simon Cowel, he might have tried to take the voters by being fast on top gear, but, he still, has brought this suodo-crap poptastic-manufatured-bollox into our homes via radio, tv, and now the internet is fighting back,
remember the campaigh to say no to 0870? Now is the time to Say NO to JOE!
The name of the song you need to download is, “killing in the name of” and not “I WONT DO WHAT YOU TELL ME’ ”
Sorry mate, but if you are going to be with a revolution of UK public, thats not buying joes, but is buying a download of Rage against the machine’s “KILLING IN THE NAME OF” then you really need to be better informed of the title!
You people are acting like Simon held a gun to our heads and forced us to do what he says. No-one FORCED me to vote, I wanted to. No-one FORCED me to buy Joes single, I chose to. That’s how democracy works baby, you get a choice about things, and of more people chose to buy the x-factor single then it gets to #1, it’s as simple as that. Even though I hate David Cameron, if the Conservatives win the next election, I’m not going to sit there bitching about how Tories are being forced down our throats, and going on like people didn’t have a choice about voting for them, because that is the way democracy works!
And on them swearing when agreeing not to, I agree with Sandra. They AGREED not to swear, and then they swore. What kind of men age they that they can’t keep their word? There was a time when a mans word was like a contract, but these people don’t seem to have any respect or honour, and if they lied about that then how the hell can we trust them to give the money to charity and not pocket it for themselves?
Well for a start the record is called “Killing in the name” not “Killing in the name OF”.
But that said I am very much in support of this, as a RATM fan anyway I want to support both the cause and the band. Knowing full well that a lot of the proceeds will go to Charity work, as with most RATM profits that get handed to the band members.
I don’t see this as a “pathetic dig” at Simon Cowell like so many have been saying. I just want to see something different and a bit more of a shock for the Xmas number one rather than the same generic ‘not even written by the artist’ trash.
The choice of song is due to its key focal point and meaning, rebellion against the force fed norm of things.
I would still support it if it was something away from my normal music choice, e.g. an Indie band like Kings of Leon, and I personally hate there music.
I dont see why everyone is so up in arms about it.
Also Kyus, i have to ask, do you actually know anything at all about RATM, i don’t think so, looking at your comment.

This is wrong in so many ways.
RATM are, and have always been for peaceful protests against unfair and disagreeable policies and topics.
Never have they suggest the physical destruction of anything, nor do they want to “mess up everything”.
Learn to find the facts before making comments that just result in you looking like an idiot who knows nothing about the topic at hand.
I think its great that a lot of people are talking about this, I really do, but who gets to number one is not important.
What is important is what was pointed out before, that we are offered a choice and then have a way of expressing our opinions. Now we can revolt at megabits per second and decide not to be suckerd into 24 hours a day, subliminal advertising and political oppression
What is that really frustrates us? Is it that we can all see that there really isn’t anything special about a television show that creates west end musical hopefuls who appear nice because we do not actually know them. Maybe it is that television just angers us because we arn’t given much choice in witnessing the truth anymore.(Perhaps we never were)
Our social awareness as a species has been slowly dumbed down by ‘ourselves’ over hundreds of years in most developed countries due to economic and technological increase and as we evolve or just move through time (for those devout amongst you) and as a semi conscious mass we are also likely to become aware of these changes.
The problem is not a little boy who has a pretty voice on television or some musicians in a band who swore on live radio. The issue seems to be that we want to fight for something good. To stand up against the ‘machine’ in all it’s various forms and say what we think.
Funnily enough although RATM are passing into a very new era of music that requires a profound knowledge of the music industry, and a strong sense of independance ( for a alternative metal/rap/rock band)to maintain any credibility, they too play the very large machine to keep afloat (go to their website, you’ll see what I mean.) Selling of the antiestablishmentarianism, anarchist, Che Guevara image needs alot of power behind it. They are after all owned by Epic Records, part of the massive SONY lable.
This is pure evidence that the times we currently live in are changing quickly. And some sort of delivery system for music is good, sort of. We can help the industry like never before understand that we enjoy all music and weather it is screaming metal or soft average Joe ballads, we can not be tricked anymore. And we can decide.
It is our children who ultimately choose the fate of our future and the music that our grand children will understand and respect and the system they are faced with and forced to belong to. They are the once that need guidance in how to express the ideas and views and understand the 1% of worthwhile music and life in the popular music realm and the corporate system that divides it. And indeed with the world we set aside for them
We (mostly all)love music, I hope. And should be aware that although healthy competition is good for development within the arts it can also be intrusive and pointless, especially when millions of dollars are a stake for Charities and rich tycoons with millions already. We need to fight this one out granted, but It would be more inspiring if it could be done with discretion and goodwill and intelligence.
I’m not even sure why I’m so interested in who will win the Christmas number 1 anymore, but for those that still buy music I Hope you are doing it for a just reason and not to have a slanging match on a forum. It would be truly sad if music was not the real only winner in this competition.
Maybe we all forget from time to time what buying a single meant. Going to the record store queing up waiting for a glimmer of that shiny 12inch with you idol on the front no string as such, just how that music made us feel. Just the music. But now it seems that we need external triggers to accompany the tracks to somehow enhance our live and listening experience to have some extra vent to unload on. We’re just all to aware of the money we spend now. What about the food we buy, the busses we frequent. Lets just be happy we have music and we can choose (for now)
Happy Christmas to all,
Ps. Good luck Joe, good luck the Machine, good luck us. (Sorry for the ramble)
Rage pocket the cash, is that a joke? Just look at the things Zack and Tom have done for charity.
Someone at the BBC should have done their home work on these guys and realized that it would be inappropriate to do a live broadcast of the song, it could have been prerecorded so they could edit out the swearing. If you haven’t heard the radio clip it’s up here http://bit.ly/7WCJf4
RATM shouting and jumping around on stage remind me of Jedward, an older and more hairy version, and they come in a package of 4 instead of 2. Buy one get one free!
I was going to buy RATM, but NO WAY, this is a sham. Rage commend themselves on speaking out about war and peace, in their Live interview they said to the creator of the group:
“Thank you very much for what you have done, I think it is an excellent lesson for people that whether its a small matter like who is at the top of the charts, or bigger issues like war and peace and economic inequality, when people band together and make their voices heard, you can completely overturn the system as it is”.
Supposedly this is about people especially young, that say no to prescibed pap, and get vocal and interested in politics, esp war and peace.
Last night a 900 post thread discussing just that was pulled from the group because a few people freaked out.
This goes against RATM’s ethics, and lets face it, the principle was bigger than the song, it doesn’t sound good.
It turns out the issue is getting at Simon Cowell, which is as sheep like as worshipping him. It shows that the facebook group has a focus on celebrity, rather than anything with worth. Hypocrites. I wont buy it.
That kid doesn’t pretend to be about politics, he is just a lad that has gone through a rapid journey to go for his dream. He at least does not pretend to be making social comments while censoring others.
JOE TO WIN!
Chris you’re exactly right. There’s nothing else to say. Rage ftw. Kyus you’re a tard.
They may have agreed not to swear, but as any fan will know, rage as a band do not agree with censorship. Back in 1993 they protested about censorship by standing naked on stage for 15 minutes, with their mouths duct taped and the letters PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center) written on their chests. Do you, or the bbc, really expect a band who feels this strongly about censorship to censor their own song? I for one do not.
Rage are a very political and passionate band, if they say they will give the money to charity then there is not a moments doubt in my mind that they wont.
You all need to get a grip on the title. It’s “Killing in the Name” any Rage fan would know that!!
RATM Campaign has the MMIX Factor.
