Avatar Tops Weekend Box Office With $73 Million

This weekend just gone, saw the worldwide debut of James Cameron’s highly anticipated “Avatar” movie. And despite the fact that it debuted on the same weekend as the worst snowstorms to hit North East America in decades, it managed to top the weekend box office.

According to moviesblog.mtv.com, the “Avatar” movie proved that besides the blizzards, it is also a force to be reckoned with at the weekend. It managed to earn a massive $73 million nationwide and if combined with foreign box office results, it earned a total of $232.2 million.

Variety described the weekend’s box office results as “the best global launch ever for a non-sequel.” This was despite it being the second best December launch behind Will Smith’s movie “I Am Legend.” “The Princess and the Frog” came in second, with $12.2 million.
