Veteran sportscaster George Michael, who gained national recognition with his syndicated highlight show “The George Michael Sports Machine,” has sadly passed away of cancer on Thursday, at the age of 70.
According to reports from sports.espn.go.com, Michael worked at Washington’s WRC-TV for 28 years, until he resigned back in 2008. The station said that he had left over the budget cuts that his programs were facing.

After hearing the news, the station issued a statement describing George as a pioneer in sports broadcasting. They also described him as a gifted interviewer and one of the hardest working journalists out there.
The statement then went on to say that their hearts were going out to George’s wife Pat, and his daughter Michelle. Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder said that George was a valuable friend.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
