Guy Ritchie’s highly anticipated new movie “Sherlock Holmes,” opened in movie theaters across North America yesterday and according to recent reports from zap2it.com, early estimates show that it has demolished previous box office records for Christmas Day.
It just about managed to edge out last week’s premiere “Avatar,” which earned $23.5 million. “Sherlock Holmes” took in $24.9 million on Friday, December 25th, beating the previous Christmas Day record of $14.4 million, which was from “Marley and Me” last year.

The movie that came in at third place was “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel,” with $14.5 million takings. “It’s Complicated,” which has apparently been nominated for three Golden Globe Awards, came in at fourth place with only $7.1 million taken.
