Angels’ Play-By-Play Announcer Rory Markas Dies

Broadcaster Terry Smith confirmed the news today on the Angels’ team-owned radio station – AM 830 that Rory Markas had died. The cause of death was not noted, but he did say “I think now everybody should just celebrate what a good person he was.”

Markas will always be remembered by the memorable call of the final out of the 2002 World Series, when he said “Erstad says he’s got it! Erstad makes the catch! The Anaheim Angels are the champions of baseball!”

Markas suffered with a blood clot in his brain in November 2008, and had only recently returned to the Angels’ booth where he made that memorable call. He also worked for Channel 2, Channel 11, Prime Ticket, and also announced games for USC and the Clippers.
