James Cameron is set to sink his own ship at the box office as Titanic is closely being shadowed by the newest Cameron instant classic, with international sales for Avatar being $1.29 billion to Titanic’s $1.24 billion, and is close to overtaking the ship in domestic totals while Titanic is sinking into the sea.

Avatar is currently at it’s sixth week in the number one position with around $36 million this week, and with worldwide ticket sales being that of close to $1.841 billion whilst the final worldwide total for Titanic was $1.843 billion. The 3D smash is billed to cross those sales tallies when all everything is recounted again tonight. Audiences are still flocking to see the remarkable spectacle, which shows in 2-D, and 3-D.

Avatar has met some criticisms over the course of it’s life, mainly one being that China banned the 2-D version of the film due to scenes that they thought were unsuitable. But they still wanted to show the 3-D version. It is thought that China wanted less people to watch the film, and therefore only stopped the 2-D version of the film. It is also noted that a ‘sex scene’ was cut from the film to preserve the films PG-13 rating, which has caused some controversy.

Other’s claim that the film is a Pocahontas rip off, but one thing is for sure, this film will not go away for a long time yet, and is set to surpass many box office records in the process.
