Weekend Box Office: ‘Dear John’ Knocks ‘Avatar’ From Top Spot

We knew that James Cameron’s “Avatar” movie, which has now become the highest-grossing movie ever, had to get knocked of the top spot sooner or later and now it appears that it has, with the chick flick “Dear John” taking its place.

According to a report at thehdroom.com, James Cameron’s sci-fi movie “Avatar” was knocked off its box office top spot over the Super Bowl weekend, after being up there for almost 2 months. It’s now dropped down to number two.

The new romantic war drama “Dear John” arrived this weekend, and managed to write up a huge $32.4 million in ticket sales. If the projected sales hold, then the “Dear John” movie will have set a new record for Super Bowl weekend.

“Dear John,” which stars Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried as the main characters John and Savannah, managed to exceed all expectations, not only overcoming Super Bowl weekend, but also the mid-Atlantic blizzard as well.
