Super Bowl 2010: New Orleans Saints Inspired by Katrina Disaster

Super Bowl XLIV was won by the New Orleans saints on their first Super Bowl appearance in their 42 year league history. The Saints apparently took inspiration from the Katrina disaster according the quarterback and most valuable player Drew Brees.

Drew Brees is quoted as saying “We played for so much more than ourselves. We played for our city and we played for the entire Gulf Coast region.” This was echoed in a further statement by the teams coach Sean Payton.

Hurricane Katrina devastated most of the Gulf Coast, forming in the Bahamas down across southern Florida and through the Gulf of Mexico, strengthening on its way back inland to Louisiana costing nearly 2000 lives most of these from New Orleans.

Drew Brees threw 32 passes for 288 yards equaling the standing record. The Saints were trailing by 10 points in the first quarter until they scored 13 unanswered points. With 6 minutes to play they were 22-16 up, they finally won with a score of 31-17.
