We can now say that the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic games are officially underway and things appear to be going quite well, for Team United States. And part of that, is thanks to short-track speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno.
Going into the last turn of the 1500 meters, Ohno was in fourth position. But after two of the three Korean competitors in front of him crashed, he managed to get a clear stretch to the finishing line and finished in second place, earning him a silver medal.

That also paved the way to a bronze medal for fellow American skater J.R. Celski. Both Ohno and Celski put the United States on the medal stand for the first time in Vancouver, while mogul skier Hannah Kearney won gold for America.
Hannah’s teammate Shannon Bahrke managed to earn a bronze, which meant that the United States ended the first day with a total of four medals and an early lead in the overall chase. It will be interesting to see if their luck keeps up.
