Up until now, we were all led to believe that an “Avatar” sequel was definite. But when speaking at the 82nd Academy Awards yesterday – which saw James Cameron’s “Avatar” lose the Best Picture award to “The Hurt Locker” – director James Cameron said a sequel is not a certainty.
While speaking to mtv.com on the 2010 Oscars red carpet, James said “We’ll see.” He then went on to say that there are no foregone conclusions on an “Avatar” sequel yet, and said that there are a few things that need to be worked out with 20th Century Fox first.

And this doesn’t appear to be the first time that he has expressed his uncertainty on “Avatar 2” either. Back in February, the celebrated filmmaker reiterated his opinion, saying that a sequel isn’t actually guaranteed at the moment, claiming there were hurdles he needed to get over.
If all the potential hurdles are overcome and things get cleared, then Cameron has previously stated that an “Avatar” sequel could well explore Pandora’s neighboring moons. And there is a possibility that the humans that were defeated in the end of the first movie, could return.
